About Me: I've been a teacher for over 20 years, in general education, special education, and inclusive teaching and learning settings. Currently I'm an educational program specialist with the Arizona State Department of Education, Exceptional Student Services. In this role, I monitor special education programs throughout the state and provide technical assistance and professional development support to educational agencies. My research interests center around the topics of educational equity, inclusive teaching and learning, collaboration, and teacher preparation/teacher learning. Previously I worked as a post-doctoral fellow with the Equity Alliance at Arizona State University. I received my doctoral degree in special education from Clemson University in South Carolina in 2009. As a National Board Certified Teacher since 2001, I mentored beginning teachers throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District and taught in higher education at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), Clemson University, and Arizona State University. I present locally, nationall and internationally at multiple conferences and events throughout the year. I have taught students with various degrees of Autism Spectrum Disorder, specific learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disturbances, mild intellectual disabilities, orthopedic impairments, other health impairments, and speech/language impairments. My research in the area of inclusive education led to change practices at my local school site, including the implementation of coteaching. At Clemson University, I received the distinguished graduate student award and the graduate teaching award for the College of Health, Education, and Human Services. Although I'm new to Arizona after living in South Carolina, and the Los Angeles, CA area, I'm learning to enjoy this new experience. I adore children of
all ages, animals, ice skating, music, dancing, reading,
playing, and the color purple. I plan to be a professor one day
researching and teaching in the areas of preparing general educators
for inclusive classrooms, and other topics related to equity, inclusion, learning
disabilities, teacher education, literacy, and academic outcomes for
elementary students with special needs.
