Living With Diabetes

My Life As A Diabetic And Tips To Manage Healthy Glucose Levels Through Diet, Supplements, And Lifestyle

I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 28.  I quickly went from diet controlled to full blown insulin dependent.  At first, I had a lot of difficulties keeping my sugars under control.  But now, after lots of trial and error, my sugars are doing great.

One of the first things I knew that I needed to do was lose weight.  I lost 20 pounds and that alone made a big difference in the way I feel and in the fluctuations of my blood glucose.

The second thing that I did was researching dietary supplements to help to manage my sugars.  I found that some products work well, some did nothing, and others made me anxious or had other negative side effects.

One of the most basic supplements that I believe that all diabetics and hypoglycemics should supplement is  chromium picolinate.  Chromium is a trace element that helps to maximize the effectiveness of insulin and helps to carry glucose into the cells.  For me, chromium made a slight difference in my sugars, and that alone warrants its addition to my supplement program.  Another great thing about chromium is that it is very affordable.

Alpha lipoic acid is another terrific supplement.  ALA does several things for diabetics.  First, it is a powerful antioxidant.  Second, it helps to protect the liver, which is important as most diabetics take several medications.  And third, and most important, alpha lipoic acid helps to carry glucose into the cells.
