David Ault - The Scientist

I am a confident, creative thinker who is always ready to listen and take on new ideas. Numerate and articulate, I am a natural communicator with a passion for talking to others and finding ways to work with them.

I am an astrophysicist by training, getting my BA Hons from Christ's College, Cambridge, before moving on to Jodrell Bank where I completed my MSc in Astronomy/Radio Astronomy in July 2004.

Since then I have wanted to combat the preconception that maths and science are hard by getting into science communication. Between January and September 2006 I worked in the planetarium at Thinktank, Birmingham's Science Museum, presenting the monthly podcast between March and September. I continue to work there from time to time, as well as writing songs on scientific themes. I am also a member of the British Interactive Group.

From 2006-2011 I co-presented the twice-monthly astronomy podcast The Jodcast, a show which regularly attracts over 2000 listeners.

I have been the scientific advisor for Etc Films and enjoyed my role of making sure that science within the visual media is not misused. I am also a private tutor in maths and sciences, helping pupils to enjoy and understand the sciences more easily.

As part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, I produced one of the 365 Days of Astronomy podcasts - listen here and you can find me in the 2010 and 2011 podcasts and am scheduled for a slot later in 2012.

I am currently working for the By Design Group, a science communication and education company for whom I directed The Big Bang East Midlands in June 2011. On the back of this we were awarded the contract to run The Big Bang West Midlands this year as well, so the timetable for June 2012 will be:

  • The Big Bang West Midlands - 26th June 2012 - Thinktank, Birmingham
  • The Big Bang East Midlands - 28th June 2012 - East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham
