BACK TO PEORIA
Both the boys and girls teams qualify for State Finals;
Dale, Boys Team capture Sectional Championship

Thanks to a pair of program best finishes at the Fenton Sectional on Saturday, both the boys and girls teams will once again conclude their season at the State Cross Country Finals to be held in Peoria, Ill. this weekend.

Led by junior Jamison Dale, the boys squad highlighted the meet by capturing Jones' first ever Sectional title to go along with last weekend's regional title.  Dale also captured his second consecutive individual title as he upended the field by nearly twenty seconds to become Jones' first ever individual Sectional Champion.

Joining him in the top ten and earning All-Sectional honors for the second year in a row was junior Kirby Lawson (3rd) and Luke O'Connor (9th).  Freshman Kyle Maloney also cracked the top fifteen (14th), while Daniel Lorden. Timothy Warren and a step-up race from Tony Gonzalez rounded out the top seven for the Eagles.

On the girls side, the Lady Eagles posted their best Sectional team finish in school history to punch their ticket to Peoria as well.  Led by a very tight first-to- fifth runner split of twelve seconds, the girls put four runners in the top twenty to secure a second place team finish behind ESPN #4 Fenwick.

The trio of Ellen Buttitta, Julia Heller and Katie Gerhart finished within a second of each other in thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth, respectively, to lead Jones, while Miranda Shaver, Julia Muller, Jennifer Geary and Gaby Gonzalez rounded out the top seven for the Eagles.

It now marks the third year in a row that the boys squad will conclude their season at the historic Detweiller Park, while the girls are returning to Peoria for the first time since 2009, when them, and the boys, made Public League history as the first 2A teams to qualify for the State Finals since the elimination of the auto qualifier in 2002.

REGIONAL CHAMPIONS (x2)
Both the boys and girls squads open IHSA State Series with Regional Titles

Placing seven runners in the top ten, the Lady Eagles cruised to a commanding victory at the Chicago University High Regional on Saturday as they brought home the program's first ever Regional Championship plaque and came one step closer to returning to Peoria, Ill. for the State Championships in November

Led by junior captain Katie Gerhart's third place finish, Jones beat host University High by twenty-seven points to advance to next weekend's Fenton High School Sectional.  Joining Gerhart on the All-Regional team was junior Ellen Buttitta (4th) and sophomore Julia Heller (5th), making it the most All-Regional honors the Jones girls have ever received.

Following up the girls performance, the boys also brought home the Regional Championship title for the second year in a row.  While the boys squad rested their usual top four runners, the Eagles still managed to place four in the top five, and six in the top ten, en route to 21-72 point victory over runner-up Mt. Carmel.

Leading the way for Jones with a second place individual finish was sophomore Daniel Lorden, who returns from last year's state qualifying varsity squad.  In addition to Lorden, fellow sophomores Tony Gonzalez and Kevin Johnson were next across the line to earn All-Regional honors, while senior Timothy Warren nabbed the fifth and final spot on the day.

Thanks to their victories, both teams will now move on to the IHSA Sectional Championships hosted by Fenton High School on Saturday, October 29.

Eagles finish off final stretch of schedule at Nike Northside/Southside Challenge, begin preparation for upcoming IHSA State Series

Both the boys and girls squads once again wrapped up their regular season schedule last weekend at the festive Nike Northside/Southside Challenge.
While the majority of varsity runners rested to further prepare for the IHSA State Series, which begins on October 22, seven runners from each team participated in third annual race, which is held during the Chicago Marathon and covers the the final 2.62 miles of the course.

Entering the meet as defending two-time meet champions, junior Ellen Buttitta led the girls team to a ninth place team finish, while junior Gaby Gonzalez and sophomore transfer Julia Müller rounded out the top three.  Completing the Jones contingent, who competed for the "Southside", was the quartet of newcomers, Jennifer Geary, Danielle Torrise, Daisy Mora and Becca Maas.

Boys Fresh-Soph Team, Pat Savage Champions

On the boys side, three sophomore Eagles – Tony Gonzalez, Kevin Johnson, and Daniel Lorden – led the way to a tenth place team finish and overall "Southside" team victory.  Seniors Josh Mason and Josh Torres also made their final regular season Jones appearances, while juniors Jose Sanchez and Yonatan Litwin capped off the Jones seven.

In previous weekends, Jones enjoyed successes at both the ACC Charger Invite and Pat Savage Invitational, where Jones' fresh-soph boys team took home first place in the Red Division.  Working out on the Niles West course, the varsity boys also nabbed a fifth place trophy in the Red Division, while the fresh-soph girls team secured a fourth place finish.

With the regular season behind them the Eagles will next lace up their spikes at the Chicago Public League Championships as they continue to prepare for the IHSA State Series, where the girls look to return to Peoria after their 2009 appearance, while the boys squad,  recently chronicled by the Chicago Tribune, aim to build on their 2010 fourteen place finish.

2011 SEASON UNDERWAY
JCP Boys #11 in  Pre-Season Poll
Pre-season camp concludes, Eagles prepare for first meet

Both the boys and girls Jones Prep squads began their 2011 campaign on August 10 as the start of official IHSA practice opened statewide. After 25 days of summer conditioning throughout June and July, the Eagles officially kicked off their season with their second annual pre-season camp, which included team trail runs at the Little Red Schoolhouse in Willow Springs, Ill. and concluded with a boys varsity team camp in Chillicothe, Ill.

For the second year in a row, the boys team has also garnered attention in ESPN's pre-season high school cross country poll, making their debut at #11 in the first batch of 2011 season rankings.  Following up their first appearance in the "Other Teams to Watch For" section of the 2010 pre-season poll, the boys went on to crack the top 25 twice last season before finishing the year at #14 after their state finals finish.  The #11 nod is the highest the Eagles have been ranked so far.

Returning front runner Jamison Dale was also listed in the poll's individual rankings, as well as the Chicago Tribune's "Boys Cross-Country Preview".  The junior assistant captain earned all-state honors in both cross-country (19th) and track (3200m, 8th) during his sophomore campaign and will be one of the top returning finishers in Peoria this November.

The 2011 schedule has also been released (see link), where the Eagles will once again open up their main stretch of competitions at the Marmion Royal Cadet Invite on September 10.  Highlighting this year's schedule will be two new meet additions with the inaugural Fenwick/St. Ignatius Invite and always competitive ACC Charger Classic.  Jones will once again wrap up it's year on November 5 with the IHSA State Finals at historic Detweiller Park in Peoria, Ill.
