Looking after your body

Looking after your body

Life in Buenos Aires can be hard on the body.....

First, there's all that dancing 'til dawn. Second, there's all that dancing in the wonderful tango shoes you couldn't resist buying here. Third, there's all that parilla (a special type of Argentine barbeque, but never say bbq to an Argentine). And then there's the hard city pavements as you walk "just a bit further" to see all the sights. Further, although the tourist sites rarely mention it, the air quality in this very large city can be far from "buenos aires"  (literally good air), and that takes its toll.

So why not plan some pampering for your body as part of your visit? The services we highlight on this page are at most an easy walk or simple bus ride from our casas.

But if there is further pampering you would like, we will be happy to recommend other places you can check out as you plan your perfect holiday. Here is the link to the Trip Advisor Spa forum (doesn't cover them all), but we warn you that it seriously difficult to get a price out of most Spas via their websites. .

Treat yourself to an Energicem session

We have just (January 2009) opened Energicem at Callao 611 - only a few short blocks from Casas Rosa y Jasmin.

Energicem is a quiet, restful place providing 40 minute sessions using Ceragem automatic massage tables.

These tables are in use all over the world, and there are people who credit them with amazing healing properties. We, however, make more modest claims: a session at Energicem will relax your body and help you to feel energised and alive.

Our own Energicem website isn't up and running yet, but here is the explanation of the Ceragem process given by Good Health Herbs (USA), who also provide this pleasurable, healing service.

The normal cost of a 40 minute session at Energicem is 30 pesos (less than $US10), but you can use our casa discount voucher and enjoy as many sessions as you like at 20 pesos each.

Appointments are required, so ask us to pre-book your  session(s)  if you want to be sure of a particular appointment time.

Take a Tao Practices workshop or private session

Maggie has been a practioner and teacher of massage, dance and movement most of her adult life. She has also been an accredited NLP practitioner for more than 15 years. She came to Buenos Aires to study tango 6 years ago, and now runs Tango Focus.

Recently she went to Paris for an intensive course with Mantak Chia, and is now a Certified Instructor of the Universal Healing Tao.
“I came to Buenos Aires to study tango – the ultimate dance of the heart - in depth and in its birthplace.  As well as tango, I dance salsa, 5 rhythms, Arabic dance, Rock and Roll and practice Tai Chi and Iyengar yoga.  I adore movement and bodywork and love to entwine this passion with my teaching of tao fundamentals.”
 Maggie holds workshops on:
  • Basic Taoist practices
  • Women's empowerment and Luscious Living (see Review "The Goddess Within" on Sallycat's blog)
  • Tango, Tao and NLP
Should your visit coincide with a workshop, we can book a place for you. Let us know that you are interested, or check at TaoFocus.

Maggie also gives private, one-to-one sessions structured around the workshop themes. These can be tailored to meet the needs of beginners through to experienced practitioners.
“As an instructor of the UHT System, my aim is help to bring powerful yet simple taoist practices into everyday life; how we can make our lives more vital, more alive and happier, not only in a workshop, but all of the time: all of it; starting now.”
The cost for a 90 minute private session is 180 pesos.

Need help now?

Should you need help for illness, injury or pain, we can recommend:
  • self applied accupressure,
  • local pharmacies (including herbal, bach flowers and homeopathic remedies),
  • a good dentist (we go there ourselves),
  • a good physiotherapist (we have used him ourselves),
  • the public hospital for emergencies (4 blocks away from Casas Jasmin and Rosa, and there is also an ambulance station within 4 blocks), and/or the Italian or German hospitals, which are only a short taxi ride away.
NOTE: Buenos Aires doesn't have General Practitioners available for casual visits as do some countries; it appears that GPs are all attached to various health plans / hospitals. We recommend that you take out adequate travel insurance before you begin your trip to Buenos Aires.

Have a massage en casa

Tania is an experienced masseur who offers her services at one of the large, downtown corporate gyms, but she will also come to our casas for your convenience and pleasure.

Originally from Tasmania, Tania has been living in Buenos Aires for the last seven years.

Tania's card read "Masajes en el cuerpo para el espiritu": of the body, for the spirit. Give both your body and your spirit a treat.

An 80 minute, healing, rejuvenating massage in your own room in our casas costs $US 35 per person. Ask us to make a booking for you. It may even be possible to schedule one shortly after your arrival, to iron out those aeroplane kinks.

Have a quick chinese massage

Need massage NOW?

Maossage has a drop-in massage centre at Spinetto Shopping Centre, 5 blocks from our casas.

They are open 7 days from 10am to 10pm, and you don't need an appointment. Generally they can take you straight away and we have never had to wait more than 30 minutes.

We have had massages with all their staff, and they're all great. For 30 minutes they charge 35 pesos.

Get your hair / nails / legs / makeup done

Getting your hair cut, coloured, ironed or whatever, or having a make-up session or manicure, pedicure &/or leg waxing can generally be achieved in a one-stop shopping expedition in Buenos Aires.

Peluquerias are on almost every block, and their prices range from smallish to outlandish. Generally there will be a pricelist outside, but remember to add all the bits you want together - don't presume that having your hair cut includes washing it as there will be two separate prices involved.

How to choose the right peluqueria for you? The way you would anywhere - look at what is going on in the salon, or ask for a personal recommendation from someone whose hairstyle you like.

There are several peluquerias close to our casas. We go to David Duquesne's at Uriburu 435 (see on map) - one block from our casas. His pricelist is in the moderate range, and Mondays seem to be a bit cheaper. Ask for Gladys - we think she's great, and she interprets mime brilliantly if you don't have any Spanish.

Eat properly

We know that all that Argentine beef is truly seductive, but don't forget to eat your daily quota of fruit and vegetables.

See Our Barrio for foodshops close by.
