Emissions & Their Control

Sources of leaks include:

  • Opening the door before all PERC vapors are removed
  • Leaking door, seals, and gaskets
  • Evaporation from removed clothing or during cleaning procedures of PERC control devices
  • Incomplete separation of PERC vapors from air and water streams before they are released to the environment
  • Vaporization of PERC liquid spilt on soil or mixed in water

Control measures include:

  • Scheduled maintenance to check for appropriate temperatures of operations
  • Checking for leaks by feeling for vapor releases or the use of a chlorinated compound detector (pictured right)
  • Use of carbon adsorbers that should be reactivated or replaced when necessary
  • Switching to a closed loop model
  • Installing Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) to reduce PERC levels in areas suspected to be an area of high PERC release
  • Using personal protective equipment when performing maintenance activities where exposure is possible
