Emissions & Their Control
Sources of leaks include:
Opening the door before all PERC vapors are removed
Leaking door, seals, and gaskets
Evaporation from removed clothing or during cleaning procedures of PERC control devices
Incomplete separation of PERC vapors from air and water streams before they are released to the environment
Vaporization of PERC liquid spilt on soil or mixed in water
Control measures include:
Scheduled maintenance to check for appropriate temperatures of operations
Checking for leaks by feeling for vapor releases or the use of a chlorinated compound detector (pictured right)
Use of carbon adsorbers that should be reactivated or replaced when necessary
Switching to a closed loop model
Installing Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) to reduce PERC levels in areas suspected to be an area of high PERC release
Using personal protective equipment when performing maintenance activities where exposure is possible
