“Sons of Earth” Inspired by Claude McKay’s “Outcast,” “Sons of Earth” is a young woman’s escape from emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her own father. As a figure that’s expected to love and care for his own flesh and blood, the father uses his daughter’s youthful innocence to dominate over her violently. Although she’s kept this pain and suffering to just her knowledge, she finds the strength and will to escape her reality for one that’ll restore her dignity and well-being. Using flashes of the past and present, “Sons of Earth” takes the viewer from the lowly state of physical abuse – so vivid that even the audience will “feel” her pain – to one of extreme elevation, where the pain fades away and the narrator is free from the chains of heartache. Taking place in a middle to upper class neighborhood, “Sons of Earth” exposes the idea that anyone, whether male/female, young/old, rich/poor, can fall victim to harsh treatment from those around them. We challenge the widely held belief that only families of low socioeconomic status suffer from such hardships. Living in a large house, attending a reputable school, and having multiple friends, you’d believe our narrator “had it all.” You’d even ask yourself, “How could this really happen to her?” As the cliché goes, “Never judge a book on its cover.” Behind that beautiful smile and content she exhibits to friends and teachers is a girl screaming for help from within. Her home doesn’t represent a peaceful safe haven as it does for her fellow peers; it is her hell. After many beatings and verbal insults, our narrator finally hears her inner voice whisper, “The time has come to free yourself at last.”
