          A Closer look at

CNN is a very popular website to find the news you are looking for. CNN focuses on the major stroies in the United States, however they also focus on what is going around the world, yet they tell stories that will help benefit them and their sub companies.

Above is an example of the CNN home page. They always have a bigger image with the top story to grab readers attention. Followed by the the actual story. The CNN homepage is set up like the above example, with the top story followed by links about:

- The World              -Entertainment       -Health           -Technology     -Business      -Sports

- US

    •         WHO CREATED THIS MESSAGE?

CNN is owned and opertated by Timewarner Productions, well as TBS and Aol.

                                          (Time Warner Building)

    • WHAT TECHNIQUES ARE USED TO ATTRAT OUR ATTENTION?

CNN makes the headline news bigger than the other stories not as important. They use pictures of the main story they are focusing on to attract your attention. They keep updating their website, so they can keep you informed about what's going on. They also put videos up about any news so you can listen instead of reading.

For example click on the following link to watch how US diplomats are enraged over Iraq duty.

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2007/11/01/todd.diplomats.revolt.cnn

CNN announces shows that will air on t.v, and shows they announce are news only. They show the weather nad blogs they put up, and they list different sections of the news across the top and at the bottom. At the bottom it gives you a brief summary of stories in that section. They have a search link, so if your looking sor something specific you can use that feature.

  • HOW MIGHT DIFFERENT PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THIS MESSAGE DIFFERENTLY THAN ME?

Using above the story about wildfires in Southern California, people that do not live in that area are not going to show that much concern. As in contrast people living in Southern California are being heavily impacted. This is something that is interfering with their lives. They had to evacuate thier homes and that put pressure on their families.

Comparing CNN and Algazeera.com (A Middle Eastern website news sources)

Looking at CNN.com they mostly provided the audience with breaking news about local news about Southern California Wild Fires. All week some headlines they provided included

"Evacuees share hopes and fears" and "In burnt unit, firefighter battles for life"

When we analyzed CNN on a particular day, there was a large image of Bush with victims from the Forest Fire and the headline read "BUSH SAYS IT"S GOIN TO BE OK"

George Bush is being portrayed as a positive symbol on this website.

In contrast to Anti-Bush sites, people receive a different persepctive and message, it all depends on the source you take a look at.

TAKING A LOOK AT A DIFFERENT PERSEPECTIVE

Aljazeera.com mostly provides their audience with the wars and events that are going on in the Middle East. Some headlines that their website provided included the following:

"Turkish warplanes bomb kurd rebels"  "UN experts reveal extent of Israels rights abuses"

This is what is going on in their life and to other people that do not live there headlines like those listed above, is just another story without that much importance because it doesnt really pertain to them. When we hear stories about the war, it concerns most people but since it's an issue that has been going on for so long the effect is not so strong. Aljazeera.com's main focus was stories going on over there. When he hear about bomb killings we might think to ourselves, "oh its awful", but since we do not live over there, that's the only reaction we get. To people living in the Middle East, bomb killings is an everyday thing that they have to expereince it they will have a deeper emotion about the situation because their families are getting killed. CNN listed stories about the war, but did not give as much enphasize or importance to them.

  •        WHAT VALUES, LIFESTYLES AND POINTS OF VIEWS ARE REPRESENTED IN,OR OMITTED FROM THIS MESSAGE?

CNN primarily focuses on what is actually happening in the world. Using the example from the headline "BUSH SAYS IT WILL BE OK" . This clearly illustrates the US trying to be a positve symbol. CNN offers stories and they try not to biast , they try to maintain a level of neautrality in most stories. CNN does a good job in not taking sides.

Although sometimes when CNN focuses on stories like oakland shootings they make a very big deal, with headlines "BREAKING NEWS". In Oakland in the poor neighborhoods this is not breaking news to them. People have different reactions to news like that. A family or single mother in Oakland is going to show a big effect and interest because she is going to be worried about her kids. As in contrast CNN provides this message and the audience watching it, that live ina nice neighborhood are just watching it for entertainments. There only reaction might be, "Good thing we do not live there". Location and how the news is portrayed show alot about our different points of views.

  •   WHY IS THIS MESSAGE BEING SENT?

This message is being sent to provide CNN's audience with informative news that is going on in the world. The try to keep their audience informed about what is going on. Even though we have concluded that CNN primarily is straight to the point to inform us, they also come up with stories (LIke the Oakland Shootings) and make it into a big deal, with headlines that draws an audience attention, and CNN benefits from that more than we do. We would say CNN is a good source to get information about what is going on in the world, but a variety of different sources is a better approach to really seeing the bigger picture and drawing conlusions for yourself.
