Goings On

Find out what we have been up to lately!

New Hobby

posted ‎‎Aug 13, 2009 5:07 PM‎‎ by Sara S

James and I have been doing a lot of cycling lately.  I finally talked him into buying the bikes a couple of months ago, and after a bit of a false start we are finally getting into a groove.  We bike to dinner on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and sometimes we go out on trail on the weekend for a longer ride.  We explored the North Little Rock side of the River Trail last weekend, and we had a blast.  Our little Schwinns could stand to be upgraded, but in the meantime I think I will get a pair of padded bike shorts.  If my butt didn't get sore, I could ride a lot longer, I think.

Lost

posted ‎‎Jan 27, 2009 5:14 PM‎‎ by James Strickland

I spent a lot of time while I was off recuperating, to re-watch all the episodes of Lost. Season 5 started a week ago but they preempted Lost for college basketball. Luckily they replayed the new episodes on Saturday so I got to see them. I record them on my Windows Media Center PC and it automatically edits out the commercials.
I'm sure ABC got many complaints about not showing basketball instead of the new episodes, but they are doing it again this week. Why? At least they are replaying them at midnight so I can record them. That seems like a crappy way to treat a hit show like Lost. Oh well.

Exercise

posted ‎‎Jan 27, 2009 5:05 PM‎‎ by James Strickland

In a couple weeks I go back for my second post-op checkup. I was given some back exercises to do but I haven't been doing them, so today I decided to start a simple workout. I use my Weider Total Body Works 5000. It is like a Total Gym that you see on TV except cheaper.
I like how it can stretch me out and you have to use your abs and back muscles to keep yourself upright while doing the exercises. Upper body exercises are fairly easy to do, but lower body exercises seem limited.
If I can keep it up my back should get stronger and hopefully make my daily activities easier and prevent future injuries.

Other houses

posted ‎‎Nov 28, 2008 7:49 PM‎‎ by James Strickland

I have been staying at my parents house since Wednesday night. Sara didn't think I should stay by myself so soon after surgery, so she dropped me off here before going to Texas with her parents. It isn't bad but its not the same after having my own place for so long. At least I didn't have to drive 8 hours to sleep in a strange bed like Sara did. Hah!
I probably could have gone home yesterday and been just fine, but I don't want to sit at home by myself all day.
I'm ready for a high pressure shower and my good internet connection.

Feeling Good

I had my surgery Monday. It went well, and I haven't had any pain except for when going from standing to sitting. The Doctor did a little work on the lowest disc and fixed the main problem in the L5 disc. He mentioned that it was the biggest herniation he had seen in a while.
Shortly after I got home, and less than 20 hours after surgery I got on the treadmill and walked 15 minutes.

Impressed

I went for the pretesting for my surgery at St. Vincent Outpatient Department. I was impressed with how they kept things moving. I spent very little time waiting, and when I was waiting I knew why. If they keep it up I'm sure everything will go great on surgery day.
At this visit they did the usual blood pressure, pulse, blood oxygen test. Also they took some blood and asked a lot of questions. They called Dr. Peek to see if he wanted any extra tests done, and he requested a chest x-ray. I thought I'd get out of there without taking my clothes off, but at least it was just my shirt and the x-ray lady was good looking ;-D . If you have any idea that you might have to pee in a cup, don't pee before you go to the doctor. It makes things take longer.
One thing that had the nurses concerned was my pulse rate being 105 or so. I don't know what is up with that. They never mentioned it at the pain management clinic.

The beginning or the end?

Today I made my second visit to Dr. Peek, my spine surgeon. The spinal steroid injections he prescribed did not shrink the disc off the nerve, so he is going to operate. I'll have to be on light duty for a few weeks, but I run about half speed most of the time anyway.
The surgery is scheduled for Monday 11-24-08 at 3 PM. I'll have to spend the night, which sucks, but hopefully they will have a fast internet connection I can use.

Adventures in jewelry making

posted ‎‎Oct 6, 2008 11:32 AM‎‎ by Sara S   [ updated ‎‎Nov 22, 2008 12:58 PM‎‎ by James Strickland ]

I've been dabbling in jewelry making, mostly making simple earring from wire and beads.  It's pretty fun.  If I can get the camera up and running, I'll post some pics.

What the doctor said

The doctor said that James has the "biggest herniated disk he has seen in a while."  He is going to schedule an appointment with a surgeon to get his opinion.

James' MRI

posted ‎‎Sep 9, 2008 2:24 PM‎‎ by Sara S   [ updated ‎‎Sep 9, 2008 2:30 PM‎‎ ]

James had his MRI done yesterday, and they gave him a CD of the images.  Since we aren't radiologists, we can only speculate, but it looks like he may have a herniated disk.
