I am Forest Engineer (Universidad Austral de Chile) and currently I am PhD student in the Institute of Silviculture of the University of Freiburg in Germany where my supervisor is Dr. Prof Jürgen Bauhus. My principal research interest is the restoration and rehabilitation of ecosystems with a silvicutural and practical point of view. My PhD project is called "Restoration of Pilgerodendron uviferum in Chiloé Island, North Patagonia, Chile". In this project I am studyng the structure and dynamics of undisturbed Pilgerodendron uviferum (Guaytecas Cypress) forests, and with this information and with some field experiments on Chiloé Island, I am searching for restoration options (active and passive) for the disturbed forests of Pilgerodendron uviferum.
My research interests are divided in 4 tematic lines: 1) Restoration of ecosystems, rehabilitation of forests and transformation of exotic monocultives in seminatural forests 2) Structure and dynamics of insular forests of Patagonia (Pilgerodendron uviferum and evergreen forests) 3) Research in bog forests 4) Conservation and biodiversity of chilean temperate forests I combine these research interests with my major passion that is the scientific exploration in extremly isolated places of Chilean Insular Patagonia. My idea is reach the study areas walking many days, with sea kayak or with my "Chilote" boat L/M Catiao. We have to carry the forest research to the most isolated places of Patagonia, where until now there are important questions to answer... Soy Ingeniero Forestal (UACH) y actualmente estoy realizando mi doctorado en el Instituto de Silvicultura de la Universidad de Freiburg en Alemania. Mi principal interés científico es la restauración y rehabilitación de bosques desde un punto de vista silvícola y práctico. Mi proyecto de doctorado se llama "Restauración de bosques de Pilgerodendron uviferum en la Isla Grande de Chiloé", en el cual estoy estudiando la estructura y dinámica de bosques prístinos de Ciprés de las Guaitecas y en base a esta información y mediante diferentes ensayos y experimentos busco opciones de restauración (pasiva y activa) para los bosques alterados de esta especie. Mis intereses en investigación se dividen en 4 líneas temáticas: 1) Restauración de ecosistemas, rehabilitación de bosques y transformación de plantaciones exóticas en bosques seminaturales 2) Estructura y dinámica de bosques insulares de Patagonia (Pilgerodendron uviferum y bosque siempreverde) 3) Estudio de bosques turbosos 4) Conservación y biodiversidad en bosques templados chilenos Estas líneas de investigación las combino con mi mayor pasión que es la exploración científica en lugares aislados y sin alteraciones antrópicas de la Patagonia Insular chilena. Mi idea es llegar a los lugares de estudio ya sea caminando largas jornadas, en kayak de mar o con mi lanchón chilote L/M Catiao.
