Welcome to Math 7HP

Dear Students/Parents/Guardians,

I would like to welcome you and your child to 7th Grade Math at John Adams Middle School.  I hope to make your child’s year at JAMS a memorable one.  Throughout the year, we will be focusing on meeting California State Standards in mathematics.  Students will be encouraged to share what they are learning with their families.

Homework is considered an important part of a student’s education. In my 7th Grade math class, homework is structured as follows:
Homework will generally be assigned twice per week, on block days (Monday/Tuesday and Wednesday/Thursday).
Occasionally, homework may be assigned on Fridays.
Homework is corrected and discussed in class the day the assignment is due, giving students valuable and immediate feedback.
Homework is not collected until the following Monday/Tuesday, giving students time to review and correct their work.
On Monday/Tuesday, students take a homework quiz (consisting of four randomly selected problems from the previous week's homework assignments) to check for homework completion and understanding.
Incomplete or missing assignments can be made up for partial credit.
A grade is given weekly for homework based on the homework quiz and turned in assignments.

Assessments will be given on alternating Fridays to check for understanding of all materials covered up to that point. I use these quizzes as a tool to determine how well the students learned the math concepts.  These quizzes also guide my instruction for the following week, giving me insight into what areas students need further instruction and practice.  There are also cumulative semester assessments and a final cumulative assessment.

The following supplies are necessary for Math 7HP class.  They should be brought to class EVERY day.

   SCAB
3-ring binder (at least 2-3" in width)
5 dividers in your binder (Warm Ups, Classnotes, Classwork, Homework, Assessments)
College ruled notebook paper or graph paper
   Pencils with eraser
Correcting pens (red or blue ink only)
   Silent pencil sharpener
Single subject spiral notebook for note-taking (graph or lined -- at least 120 pages in spiral)

All students are expected to follow the classroom conduct rules. These can be found in the JAMS SCAB book.  Consequences will apply when necessary.  I appreciate your help in supporting these rules.  A student’s citizenship grade will reflect his or her behavior in class.

Grades are given according to the following percent distribution:

Assignments 40%                                    Assessments 60%

The Grade Scale used for Math 7HP is as follows:

A+            97-100%
A               94-96%
A-             90-93%

B+            87-89%

Last, but definitely not least, communication between parents and teachers must be a priority if a student is to be successful. Your support, cooperation and involvement will help to make this a productive and exciting school year.

Sincerely,
