Assignment Policy

Classwork and Homework:

Assignments (including both classwork and homework) account for 30% of the student's overall grade.

Daily classwork assignments include bell work (typically, review of prior concepts), notes on new concepts, group assignments, and individual assignments. This work will be collected and graded frequently.

Homework will be assigned 2-3 times per week.  Assignments will be posted in class and on this website.  It is the responsibility of each student to write down the assignments before leaving school each day. While I do my very best to maintain a current website of homework assignments, there will be times (for instance, when I am absent) when it hasn't been updated. I recommend that each student obtain the phone numbers of a few students in the class in order to obtain assignments if needed.

Assignments are graded based on completeness. Work must be done on lined or graph paper (all graphing problems must be completed on graph paper). Each assignment must include a complete heading and title, and be done in pencil. For full credit, each problem must be attempted. All work must be shown neatly and clearly, step-by-step, as needed to prove the solutions(s). The solution(s) should be boxed or circled. When assignments are from the textbook, students must check the odd-numbered problems by looking in the back of the text, and show any necessary corrections in pen (any color but black). This must be completed before the assignment is due in class. The even-numbered problems will be corrected in class.

Assignments will be given points in class on the day the work is due. Work that is incomplete (criteria not met) or missing will be given a 0 points. Partial credit will be given when the assignment is fully completed according to the above criteria. Missing work should be completed in a timely manner in order for the student to master the concepts and not fall behind. Missing work must be completed within one week in order to obtain partial credit.

Students who are absent have one extra class day from the day they return to complete missing work for full credit, unless there are special circumstances and an arrangement is made with the teacher. If absent work is turned in later than this, partial credit will be given for the assignment. It is the student's responsibility to find out the missing assignments and submit the work for credit.

The goal of homework is learning.  Homework is assigned to provide students with valuable practice and allow students to reflect on the most essential ideas/concepts of each lesson.
