West Hills Exercise & Nutritional Science
        Overview:
ENS is designed to provide students with the knowledge and ability necessary to attain and maintain
a healthy lifestyle.  The emphasis of this class revolves around five key curricular components:  Exercise Science,
Cardiovascular Fitness, Rhythm and Movement, Lifetime Activities, and Strength and Fitness Building.  The
objective of this class is to give students a hands-on exposure to key health and fitness concepts that will empower
them to pursue a healthy lifestyle.

Standards:  The following standards will be used to guide instruction.  Multiple assessments of student learning
will be conducted throughout the term. Results of students’ achievement of standards will be kept in students’ binder.
-Students understand and demonstrate competence in physical activities for the following categories:
teambuilding, cardiovascular fitness, exercise science, lifetime activities, and rhythm and movement.
-Students will design and implement a personal fitness program that will help them achieve overall
                fitness and lifelong health.
-Students will acquire knowledge and skills appropriate for social development within their family,
                community, school, and peer relationships.
-Students understand nutritional concepts and how nutrition effects: weight control, eating disorders,
                physical fitness, and lifelong wellness.
-Students will be assessed in 6 FitnessGram activities.  The activities include aerobic capacity, body composition,
muscular strength, abdominal strength, and two assessments on flexibility.  If the
students do not pass 5 out of the 6 assessments they will automatically be enrolled in ENS their
                sophomore year.

Materials Needed:  Students are required to come equipped with basic school supplies (paper, pencils, pens)
including a notebook that is designated specifically for ENS. In addition, students must come dressed in an
appropriate ENS uniform including athletic shoes, and socks.  The Exercise and Nutritional Science uniform is
$20.00 for the set.  Students may also dress in plain black basketball shorts and a t-shirt that is plain and of school
colors (blue, black, gray, or white).  It is recommended that the student’s name be put on all of their belongings.
Each student will be assigned a locker for their use during the term, and will be responsible for the school lock that
is provided.  If the lock is lost the cost to replace it is $10.00.   West Hills High School is not responsible for lost
 or stolen items.

Loaners:  Loaners are available on a daily basis free of charge.  If a student needs socks there is a .50 charge.
Students will provide their student I.D. to their teacher  If the loaner clothes are not returned the student will be fined
$20.00.

Non-Suits:  Students are expected to dress for activity every day in the recommended clothing.  Non-suits will
receive no credit for that day.  Students can make up three non-suits per semester.  If a student has three non-suits within
a semester their grade will be an automatic "C".  If a student accumulates six or more non-suits the student will receive an
"F" in the class.

Grading:  The following components will be calculated into the student’s grade:
DStrenght and Fitness                          20%                    Cardio Fitness                      20%
Rhythm and Movement                         20%                    Exercise Science                 20%
Lifetime Activity                                  20%                     (Tests, quizzes, assignments, & folder)

Medical Conditions and Absences:
A written note from a parent or guardian is required to
excuse or modify students’ participation in class due to a current medical condition.  A Doctor note with specific
limitations is required for any student that is not able to participate for 3 or more days.  Any time that a student is
not able to participate in class activities is still required to dress for class.  A student with more than 15 continuous
school day absences will automatically be dropped from their ENS class.

Make-Ups:  Students can arrange to make-up class activities by attending scheduled make-up activities.
Students must sign up for make-up days on the designated sheet located outside the coaches office.

Parent/Family Involvement:  Parent/family support and involvement is crucial to students’ pursuit
of healthy living.  I encourage parents, guardians and family members to ask students about what they are
learning in ENS.  It often creates the opportunity for valuable dialogue.  Better yet, I encourage families to take
the opportunity to find methods for becoming physically active as a family unit as it is a phenomenal way of
reinforcing the importance of healthy living, and can be a whole lot of fun.

ENS/Locker Room Policies:
The following is expected of each student.
Conduct that meets the four Core Values of West Hills.
◊       Respect Yourself!        ◊ Respect the Learning!
◊       Respect Others!          ◊ Respect This Place!

  •                Students will meet in their assigned roll call area six minutes after the period begins (see tardy policy).
  •               Water in a clear bottle is encouraged.  There is no food, drink or gum in any ENS facility.
  •               Each student will be assigned a locker.  All items should be labeled and secured in their
OWN (ASSIGNED) locker at all times with the lock that is provided by the school.  Any lock
that is lost or damaged will result in a $10.00 charge.
  •               Students are expected to care for and maintain all equipment and facilities.  Any broken or lost
equipment due to failure to follow class guidelines will be the student’s  financial responsibility.

  •              Cell phones are not allowed in any ENS class.
  •               Students are not allowed to be in the hallway at any time.  Students are to use the side doors labeled
Boys/Girls Locker room to enter and exit.  Students are not allowed to enter and exit through the team
room doors.  Students who use the hallway and or team room doors will be given a referral.

Permission Requested: There are 3 things we are requesting parent/guardian permission for in order to
enhance the learning experience for your child this year in ENS.  If you would like your student to be exempted
from any of the below, please indicate on the return portion of this document (the Parent Contact Form).
1. Permission to take your child slightly off campus with the class for participation in supervised walks.
2. Permission to show a PG rated movie that correlates to the class content we are discussing at that time.
3. Permission to take pictures and/or videos of students during lessons.  Pictures will be posted in
