James River High School PTSA

Programs and Projects

Our PTSA dues go a LONG, LONG way - to support the following programs and projects throughout the year:

Legislation

Each year the Virginia PTA identifies issues that the PTA believes are of importance to our membership in the continued education of our young people. Legislative action items and policy statements are developed and all PTA members throughout Virginia are given an opportunity to vote on those items.

Neighborhood Coffees

Neighborhood Coffees are informal gatherings of parents in a particular neighborhood with Mr. Titus and a guidance counselor. It is a good way to communicate with our administration and get answers to questions you may have about how our school operates, county-wide educational issues, or the future direction of James River High School. If you would like to host a coffee in your neighborhood, contact Laurie Delegge (330-4402 or bugnmeva@aol.com) or Roxanne Ghaharmani (roxxmani@comcast.net).

Class Coffees

Your PTSA is hosting a Coffee for each grade level which are held from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Library. Mr. Titus and a guidance counselor will be there to answer any questions parents may have. This is a great opportunity to learn more about James River, as well as class-specific information. There will also be parent seminars held prior to the Class Coffees. These seminars will begin at 6:00 p.m. and feature a guest speaker on a topic of particular relevance to class parents.

  • Freshman Coffee is scheduled for December 1, 2009
  • Sophmore Coffee is scheduled for March 30, 2010
  • Junior Coffee is scheduled for January 26, 2010
  • Senior Coffee is scheduled for October 27, 2009
Post-Prom

Post Prom Party!  Juniors and Seniors are invited to attend a fun, safe, alcohol and drug free event following Prom, from midnight to 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 1st.  There will be inflatables, a casino, games, food, prizes and a DJ!  More to follow from the chair, Kathy Margopoulos, as this event nears.

Student Directory

The Directory is a handy reference for keeping in touch with James River High School friends and parents. All JRHS students are included in the directory, with the exception of those students who elect to “opt-out”.  One directory per family is free with PTSA membership.  Any remaining copies may be purchased for $7.00.  Contact Karen Knorr at 320-0162 or karenknorr@mac.com for more information.

Scholarships for Seniors

Each year the PTSA awards several scholarships to a number of qualified seniors.  To qualify, a student  must join the PTSA by the end of October, be accepted to a college, vocational or technical school, have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and contribute to the James River High School community.

Welcome Desk

The PTSA staffs the welcome desk during school hours. The Welcome Desk Volunteers greet all guests who enter James River High School and provide assistance and direction. If you have some free time during the day and are interested in volunteering for the School's Welcome Desk, please contact Judy Deichman at 378-3738 or judith4125@aol.com.

Faculty

The PTSA sponsors several events throughout the year: Welcome back breakfast in August, Soup and Salad during Parent Conferences, the Faculty Appreciation Luncheon during Teacher Appreciation Week, and the end of the year Faculty Breakfast.

The Golden Apple Awards

Golden Apple Awards are a monthly recognition program for teachers and staff members who go above and beyond their everyday duties and job descriptions. Teachers are also recognized for being innovative in their teaching methods, or for collaborating with other areas of the curriculum.

PTSA Nominating Committee

Each spring, a PTSA Nominating Committee is formed to nominate candidates to fill upcoming PTSA Officer vacancies on the PTSA Board. Vacancies for the 2010-2011 school year will be posted here in early spring.

PTSA Website

The PTSA website is a clearinghouse of information regarding PTSA as well as school happenings for parents, teachers and students. PTSA memberships and volunteer hours make all this possible! You can be a part of this effort by joining the PTSA and working with us. We welcome and encourage everyone in the James River community to join the PTSA and volunteer!
