J. W. Carroll
JW was Justice of Peace in Eastaboga, Alabama. He was member of Masons. He
enlisted in the CSA in Lincoln Co., GA in September 1861 and served in Co. F,
22nd Regiment (Inf.) of the Georgia Volunters during Civil War. He applied for
CSA pension in Calhoun County, Alabama on 29 April 1892. Was "shot in the hand
and head affecting his hearing and otherwise disabling him" at Seven Pines, Fair
Oaks, Virginia. (Application for pension indicates battle was in 1863). Civil
War History gives date that battle took place as 31 May/1 Jun 1862. However,
records (Medical) in possession of Federal Govt. Archives and microfilm copies
at Georgia State Archives, Atlanta, GA. show "finger shot off in battle at
King's School House, VA." Records show he was present at a Roll Call on
2-28-l865. No further record shown. Those medical records indicate he was in
hospital on 6-30-1862 and sent on furlough for 30 days on 7-7-1862. His widow
(Martha Carroll) applied for pension based on his service in 1901 and presumably
drew it until her death. Her death date unknown. All records of the Confederate
Soldiers were captured by the Feds and sent to Washington. Other Carrolls in the
22nd Georgia Inf. were: William A. Carroll, Co. K; Richmond J. Carroll, Co. K;
Nedon J. Carroll, Co. K; Josiah David Carroll, Co. K; John H. Carroll, Co. K; S.
M. Carroll, Co. G; Richmond S. Carroll, Co. B. No relationship to these other
Carrolls established. Last name spelled as CARROL in 1850 Abbeville Co., SC
census. Records in Calhoun County, AL shows he purchased property in
Jacksonville, AL in 1868. JW is buried at Creswell Cemetery, Eastoboga,
AL.
(Land records not extensivily searched)
A flag pole with Confederate
Battle Flag has been errected in JW's name with plaque showing his unit in Cobb
County, Austell, GA at #297 (Parkerson Mill Road)
(4-22-2002).
