Jacobs Ultimate began after a group of kids, on a prom bus, decided to put together a tournament for the school to participate in. From there over 100 kids signed up for our first ever intra-school tournament. The next year, after increased interest we officially put together our club team to play other schools through the Chicago Ultimate Juniors Organization. It was a "raw" season as many players opted for sheer athleticism over any strategy. I remember going to an ultimate conference and someone asking, "we couldn't defend your offense, what did you run?" I said, that's what we did...we ran. It was the first year and the kids did great and had a blast doing it. Since then we began getting more and more serious. It's a unique situation to get a group of kids who never played an organized game to understand organization. Most teams have a knowledge bank that they draw from and enough skilled players to run the concepts well. Then, others can imitate. For us, we had to build that. Through the next 2-3 years our players began taking it more and more serious, until now when we have a group of freshmen really learning the game well thanks to our dedicated and motivational captains. Now, Illinois runs two leagues (one USAU based and one Ultimate Chicago based), several good programs, a YCC team, and youth players who have goals to make top open Chicago club programs. The school has really embraced us as well. Several administration wear their ultimate apparel, they ask about our games, provide us with resources, and even include us as an athletic program. Something that I'm quit proud of. Having the community and school support means a lot to growing programs. We have over 14 freshmen playing this spring, and Dundee Middle School just officially started their first team. Things are looking up for Jacobs Ultimate and I can't wait to see where we go from here.
