Classroom management and information distribution is a common problem among teachers.  I think of this as how to get my file cabinet outside of the classroom.  I want my class information accessible to all of my students, colleagues, and parents any time of the day or night.

Today, if a student needs a worksheet, copy of an assignment, or even a rubric most teachers have to meet with the student and the information is handed (distributed) to the student in paper form. This is not the most efficient way to manage your information in the classroom. Paper based distribution has many problems:

  • paper is place sensitive. The teacher and student have to meet to make distribution work. I know you can mail it but it's both a waste of time and money.
  • paper is not good for our environment.
  • Paper is not easy to share.
  • paper is degradable (it won't last and can be effected by the environment

I propose an online solution to information distribution. Why keep your class information online? There are many reasons to do this. Not less:

  • online distribution enables the person seeking the information to access it when he/she needs it.
  • information can be downloaded to a computer as many times as needed (without disturbing the teacher or student)
  • online information gives students a way to take charge of their learning by not having to worry about meeting with the teacher every time he/she needs some class information.

When thinking about distribution of your class content you should think about the interplay between the technology, content, and pedagogy. Also, when you choose an online answer to your information management and distribution needs you need to think of what types of files you will need to distribute.

In today's classroom there are many different formats that information comes in and you must take into account: Word=.doc; Image=.jpg; Photoshop=.psd; web=.html and many more.  I propose that an online distribution system using a website can help manage all of your teaching class content and artifacts.
