Job Description for Associate Pastor


Position


The Irvine United Congregational Church seeks an Associate Pastor to join with other paid staff and lay leaders to promote congregational growth in both number and Christian engagement through worship, education, community outreach, and social interactions; to join other paid staff and lay leaders in developing plans for a service to be held regularly other-than on Sunday, using liturgical forms and worship practices that may be attractive to children, youth and young families; to develop and lead programs to attract and engage children, youth and families, especially those affiliated with Irvine United Congregational Church (IUCC); and to adopt social concerns as a focus in program development, making the social and physical wellness of children, youth and families in both congregation and community a signature theme.

Duties


Under the general supervision of the Senior pastor, the Associate Pastor will lead lay volunteers in developing programs for children, youth, and young families, helping them to build valued relationships and to find ways for¬ward on shared Christian paths, embracing both traditional and nontraditional intimate groups as equally worthy of succor and support; supervise a part-time Youth Group Coordinator; working with lay volunteers, take responsibility for Sunday morning Christian education for children and youth; in partnership with the Senior Pastor, take responsibility for the confirmation program, beginning in Fall 2010; in coordination with lay volunteers, take leadership in planning and deploying summer programs for children, and special children’s presentations and pageants at Christmas and other appropriate times; working with lay volunteers and the Music Director, plan and initiate children’s choirs and/or other regular opportunities for children and youth artistic participation in worship; keep abreast of current trends, methods and materials available in the area of Christian education and youth programs from denominational and other appropriate sources; ensure that featured programs for children, youth and young families frequently include social concerns as foci;  interpret and communicate to the broader congregation the purposes, functions and activities designed for children, youth and young families, using the congregational newsletter, web site, and other suitable means; build and maintain networks in communities that encompass or abut Irvine and Orange County in order to understand, and partner with as appropriate, agencies and entities concerned with the wellness of children, families and youth; take a role during Sunday morning worship; offer Christian Education classes or other learning opportunities; undertake other recognized and appropriate pastoral duties including visiting sick and shut-in members; work with staff and volunteers to contribute to improvements and success in other areas of congregational interest, including stewardship, and outreach and growth; conduct baptisms, weddings, memorial services as requested; in periods when he is absent, fill in for Senior Pastor; prepare and deliver sermons at a frequency determined by agreement with the Senior Pastor and the IUCC Coordinating Council; and undertake other duties as requested.

Requirements


Must be an ordained minister in good standing with the United Church of Christ, or be on track for ordination through a UCC Association Church & Ministry committee or recog¬nized denominational partner.; demonstrate commitment to prayer and personal spiritual development; show ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, to work harmoniously and effectively with a wide variety of individuals and groups, to envision, plan and deploy programs that children, youth and young families will find attractive, to set priorities, and to recruit and lead lay volunteers; must be willing to become a member of Irvine United Congregational Church.

Desirable Qualifications


Familiarity and capacity in using the Internet and other modern media as tools for professional success; in using modern media in making presentations, including in worship; in leading worship that features contemporary themes and liturgical styles; experience in a multiple staff church; Interest and talent in music or other fine and performing arts.
