Mike Takes Charge At Starbucks -- At Least He Would If He Could!

posted Aug 8, 2011 1:49 PM by Mike Pollock

Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Other times, the squeaky wheel gets picked up virally by an assortment of news sources. Such was the case with my little post on the Starbucks Gossip blog about why some New York City Starbucks locations have been covering up their electrical outlets with blank faceplates you can't plug anything into. Well, after enduing the usual hatred that expressing your opinion on the Internet can get you, someone chimed in with an actual answer. When the blogmaster noticed my issue might have some legs, he promoted my question to its very own thread. That snowballed into several news sources picking up the story, and mentioning me and my (slighty erroneous) credits by name! One of the folks who saw one of those articles was Steven Lowell, Community Manager for Voice123.com, and he turned me into a post on their blog!

Meanwhile, after a week, I'm still waiting for a callback from a Starbucks representative after I placed a call about the matter to their customer service center, but that's a story for another time....

Lizzie -- The Video

When Elizabeth Taylor died on March 23, 2011, as a song parodist I was almost immediately reminded of the great comedic musical genius Tom Lehrer, and his 1965 ode to Alma Maria Mahler Gropius Werfel, a Viennese socialite who became the wife of composer Gustav Mahler, architect Walter Gropius, and novelist Franz Werfel, as well as the consort of several other prominent men. It was Alma's obituary, listing all her sexual conquests, which caught Mr. Lerhrer's eye and prompted him to pen the aforementioned ballad in her honor.

I figured if Alma and her three husbands deserved a song, surely Liz and her seven husbands/eight marriages (Conrad Hilton, Jr., Michael Wilding, Mike Todd, Eddie Fisher, Richard Burton [twice!], John Warner and Larry Fortensky) were more than twice as worthy of such an honor, so I took it upon myself to fill that need. For more non-musical information on Liz's life, and loves, check out her Wikipedia entry. My Favorite Husband - "The Wills"

New Jersey's Teaneck New Theatre (TNT) concluded its 24th season with a re-creation of an episode of the old-time radio series "My Favorite Husband." The popular comedy series originally starred Lucille Ball and was the forerunner to I Love Lucy.

TNT’s version of the episode titled "The Wills" is directed by Lisa Garrabrant. Barbara Liebgott is the producer. The broadcast aired Sunday, Dec. 5, on the Fairleigh Dickinson University radio station WFDU. Click the player above, or here, to listen.

"My Favorite Husband" aired from July 1948 through March 1951 and is based on characters created by Isobel Scott Rorick. Written by Jess Oppenheimer, Madelyn Pugh and Bob Carroll, Jr., "The Wills" was originally broadcast March 19, 1950 on CBS.

"My Favorite Husband" is TNT’s fifth annual airing of old-time radio shows on WFDU. The project, which debuted with an episode of Suspense, continued with The Great Gildersleeve, a second Suspense episode and last year’s Father Knows Best pilot show.

"The Wills" tells the tale of Liz and George Cooper, a happily married pair who have been invited to spend a weekend at the country lodge of another couple. Before they leave, Liz notices a few unsettling things that make her suspicious. For example: There’s only one return plane ticket, she’s just signed her will, and George is taking supplies (such as poison) not usually associated with a weekend getaway. Although Liz tries to put two and two together, it doesn’t add up. And that’s when the fun starts.

Michelle Thomas-Hanson is Liz/Lucy. Ron Schaumburg plays George. Mary Lee Smith portrays Katie, the maid.

Harry Bates is Mr. Atterberry, George’s boss. Martin Cohen plays Doctor Stephens. Mike Pollock is the announcer.
