The school year is winding down.
We have completed BizTown, Gates McGinite vocabulary and reading comprehension tests, Oral Reading Fluency testing, District Course Assessment Math testing, and finally today we are finishing Computation math testing.
READING / WRITING
In reading and writing between now and the end of school we will be doing read alouds from "The Mad Scientists Club" and associated assignments to build vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency, sequencing, analyzation, questioning, etc. We are also working through "The Call of the Wild" in reading group, and having discussions about symbolism, power, heroism and working on our higher level synthesis, evaluation and analyzation skills. Of course, even though AR is officially over now, we still have time for SSR most every day too.
MATH / SCIENCE
In math between today and the end of school we will be playing some games outside (measurement and estimation-based games), some games inside (such as cardgames to work computational fluency, chess to learn strategy and how this relates to algebra, etc.) and continue doing morning math journals. Additionally, the students will be learning the equations to calculate the volume of spheres, cylinders, and cones. Depending on how long this takes, we may also get to calculating the slope of a line. In science, my hope is to have a short mini-unit on flight in which we watch a Bill Nye video on the forces and history of flight, students build gliders, stomp rockets and distance paper air planes.

It has been such a great year and I have been so blessed with the students in my classroom. I am really going to miss them next year but I know that they are well-prepared to meet the challenges that they will face. |
