Our class has voted to have a "classroom economy" this year.
This is a system in which every student gets two paychecks each month with virtual currency (not real money) based on getting their homework done, doing their classroom job (pencil sharpener, etc.) and doing other positive things for the class (donating books, getting their name read on the Friday announcements for doing something good, etc.)
With the virtual money they earn, they must pay for their apartment (desk) and car (chair). They can also save up for auctions, where they can bid on fun things like gift cards to 1/2 Price Books, but they must pay their bills before spending money on entertainment items. This system is to teach them about real life and stresses the importance of personal accountability.
Sometimes, just like in real life, if they don't do their job (get their homework done) or they don't do their classroom job (forget to shelve books, take out the recycling bin, etc.) or break the law (cheat on a test, or break the classroom rules and so forth), they have to pay fines or have money withheld from their paycheck.
This system should be a lot of fun, but I will need some help. Mostly, I need donations for the monthly auctions. Items donated should have a "school flavor" (ie hand-held game systems are fine as long as they are chess or sudoku, rather than racing games or donkey kong). Footballs and frisbees and so forth are fine too, emphasizing fitness and exercise. Drawing and art supplies are wonderful. We'd also like to ask for Half Price Books giftcards. Students can usually get 8 books (including tax) with a 10 dollar gift card there.
Thank you so much for your support this year!
