The knowledge field of ITC is geo-information science and earth observation, which consists of a combination of tools and methods for the collection - through aerospace survey techniques -, storage and processing of geo-spatial data, for the dissemination and use of these data and of services based on these data.

Participatory spatial planning & management (PSP) in land & land resources (both rural and urban) has a dynamic of empowerment and good governance imperatives. Processes of land resource changes means planners have to cope with resource pressures, social conflicts, shifting power balances, all of which have spatial (information) implications. Participatory mapping & PGIS together with appropriate visualization techniques give insight into spatial planning & management issues.

We train participants in the concepts of PGIS within the context of issues in geo-information for participatory spatial planning & management, local & indigenous spatial knowledge, community-based management, problem & conflict analysis, stakeholder interests, good governance and information management.

Our courses in PGIS use the following tools & techniques:

  • participatory spatial data acquisition, participatory mapping, PRA.
  • GPS, mobile GIS, ArcPad, field data recording and data preparation.
  • visualisation of spatial relationships, interactive mapping.
  • participatory spatial planning & management processes, and policy instruments.
