ITALO  LOPEZ  GARCIA

I am a senior economist at the Center of Economic and Social Research, University of Southern California, and a Research Fellow at IZA, specializing in labor economics and development economics. My work focuses on two primary areas:

1. Early Childhood Development (ECD): I investigate the impact of ECD parenting interventions and parental investments on children's development. Through Randomized Control Trials, I've assessed the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and sustainability of impacts over time of group-based parenting interventions in Chile and rural Kenya. Currently, I lead two multi-year NIH-funded studies aimed at designing more scalable ECD interventions in low-income, rural settings. In previous work, I have also studied the importance of the timing of parental income for children's long-term human capital and intergenerational mobility.

2. Health Investments and Labor Supply: In this line of research, I develop measures of work capacity among US workers and examine their implications for labor market inequalities as well as labor supply transitions later in life. My work also involves real-time data collection to understand how job demands and leisure activities affect labor supply and health outcomes among older adults. Using life-cycle models, I have also examined how retirement affects cognitive decline among older Americans, and the incentives for human capital accumulation and labor supply from the pension systems in Chile and South Korea.
