Dario Fo (born 24 March 1926), is an Italian satirist playwright, theater director, actor, painter,  and composer. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997. He uses methods of commedia dell'arte and works closely with his wife, the leading actress Franca Rame, with whom he founded the theater company Compagnia Dario Fo-Franca Rame in 1959, in Milan.

In 1969 Fo and Rame presented for the first time Mistero Buffo (Comic Mystery), a play of monologues based on a mix of medieval plays and topical issues. It was very popular in Italy and many other countries around the world and has had 5000 performances--even in sports arenas.
