UT is proposing to drastically cut and lay off teachers and support staff at UT-Austin, increase class sizes and reduce the number of course offerings on basic undergraduate education. • All colleges are being asked to lay off undergraduate teaching staff. • The College of Liberal Arts is being asked to lay off 20-33% of lecturers, assistant instructors, and teaching assistants, 78 to 300 people total. • The College of Natural Sciences is being asked to lay off 10% of their lecturers, teaching assistants, and research assistants. • 40 support staff employees from Information Technology and the College of Engineering were laid off in September 2009. • 16 support staff employees from the McCombs School of Business were laid off in October 2009. • Non-tenured instructors and support staff are key to quality undergraduate education. • The UT budget is not experiencing a deficit. Why such drastic cuts? AS A STUDENT, WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP? 1. Talk to your parents (especially if they live in Texas!) 2. Call the UT President and the UT Board of Regents UT President William Powers, 512-471-1232 The UT Board of Regents, 512-499-4402 Tell them: As a concerned student/parent of a student at UT-Austin, I ask that you reconsider shifting UT's priorities away from quality undergraduate education. Please stop the layoffs and budget cuts that will harm the quality of undergraduate education at UT-Austin. 3. You and your parents need to call your Texas State Representative and Texas State Senator from your home district in Texas.
