Statman Soccer Player Eval

Statman Soccer

If you attend soccer games for any reason, then this application is for you.   It is written by a coach to be used by coaches, parents and fans alike.  At the most basic level this application allows you to track the time that has elapsed during a game, and the game’s score.  However, the fun really starts when you want to keep track of more interesting statistics.   For example, at any given moment, how long has each of the players been in the game?    If you are interested in a particular player on the field, how many touches has that player had during their time in the game.?  If you are tracking numbers for an entire team, how many touches does each player have, how many does the entire team have and how many does the other team have?  Who on your team is most prone to give up possession of the ball?  Who on your team, most commonly, is the one to win possession back from the opposing team?   If a Penalty Kick is taken, would you be curious to know for future reference, where and how the player hit the ball?  This application, literally, has it all.  Features include:

    - Track statistics for multiple players, teams, and games

    - Track players by name and/or number

    - Visual representation of game events on screen

    - Each game may have a different game length, and tracking verbosity level

    - Four different verbosity levels

    - How long was each player in the game during a given period, or the entire game?

    - Statistics tracked:

+ Touches (by player and by team; numbers also tracked to identify the last person on the team to touch the ball, likely a turnover, and the first person on the team to touch the ball, likely a defensive win)

+ Shots (who took the shot; what was the result of the shot, ie. saved, hit iron, hit wide, etc.)

+ Corners (who took the corner; what was the result, ie. header from a teammate, saved by keeper, etc.)

+ Crosses (who crossed the ball; was it hit well but no teammate had made a run; was it hit behind the net, etc. )

+ Fouls (who fouled; who was fouled; what was the result of the foul; did it halt the opponents attack; did the player get a card)

+ Turnovers (who turned the ball over; was it caused by a bad touch, a bad pass, a bad throw-in, etc.)

+ Headers (who won the header, was it headed to a teammate, was it a defensive clear, was it a shot on goal, etc.)

        + Saves (who)

+ Defensive plays (tackles, stolen passes, shot deflections; also defensive mistakes like being dribbled by an opponent)

+ Combinations (which players were involved; was it a takeover, a wall pass, overlap, etc.)

Statman Soccer Player Eval

SMSoccerEval is a tool developed and used by a soccer coach that can be used to objectively rank players on a soccer team.   Determining the best players on a soccer team, like most team sports, is subjective by nature.   If you are a coach trying to identify the best players at a tryout or those that should be getting the most playing time, or if you are a fan wanting to rank the players on your favorite team according to your own scale, or even if you are a player vying to earn a spot on a team and looking for areas that you measure well against other players and areas that you may want to improve in, this app is for you.

To rank players an editable weighting system is used.   For example, one of the preset categories that ships with the app is “Stamina” which may be considered a valuable trait to have as a player so it receives a fairly high default weight of “25”.   The user then rates the players on their team, typically on a scale from one to ten.   The user has the ability to remove any existing weighted categories, modify their weights, or add additional categories that were not shipped with the app.  The application keeps a running, sorted total, so the user can instantly see at any time how the players on their team rate with all the weighted categories added together.

To further increase the validity of the player evaluations, a user may decide to organize players by their positions on the field, so that defenders, forwards keepers, etc. can be evaluated against other players at their position with categories that are most specific to their need.

Even though this application was written with soccer in mind, there is nothing that would preclude using it for any other team sport where a certain amount of objectivity is desired in an otherwise subjective environment.

Features include:

-       Dynamic sorting of players in each weighted category

-       Sorted totals for all players in a team (group)

-       Ability to take notes, justifying players ratings in each category

-       Ability to mail rankings to any person in your address book

-       Categories can be added to include anything a user may desire

-       Negative values can be used to rate players in non-desirable categories like “Likelihood of giving up PK”
