Shaker Heights High School - Igniting Streams of Learning 2009

Welcome to the
SHHS ISLS 09 Website!

In Shaker Heights, the motto is: "A community is known by the schools it keeps." And the community keeps us well - with high diversity, community support, and many opportunities for outreach and sponsorship for extracurriculars and unique courses, Shaker Heights High School is a wonderful example of the potential of public education. When given the chance to be a part of something greater in the field of science education, we jumped at the chance - please click any of our individual pages to find out more about our thoughts on the institute!

While our experience at Hiram College may be over, but it seems much of the work has just begun. We've recently met again to go over our learning object, but we came out with a significantly different (and probably more realistic) goal in mind - adopt a Shaker wetland and ensure that it's passed down through generations of Shaker Students.

On July 22nd, we chose our wetland and performed an ORAM to get baseline data that future students can use to compare wetland conditions. During that time, we decided upon the best teaching methods to show students how to use ORAM...

We also met Nate Beccue of the Shaker Lakes Nature Center, who helped us identify marsh plants and distinguish them between native vs. invasive. Please click the learning object link for more information!
