Goals for Abroad

Cultural Goal:

Given the opportunity for interaction is given, I will examine the similarities and differences of the Dutch's famed easy-going attitudes with those I've been exposed to in my home state, throughout the entire semester abroad.

I find people the most fascinating aspect of different cultures, and love that there is so much to learn from the variety and uniqueness brought forth by each and every country. I grew up in Hawaii, a melting pot of many cultures, but one thing everyone had in common, including myself, was a very laid-back attitude. I think this is why I am drawn to Amsterdam, a place that is notorious for its easygoing and open-minded people. I'd like to meet as many of these people as possible, and create long-lasting relationships with them. All in all, I'd like to grasp from them what sets them apart from the people I am used to, and see how such a relaxed persona can be shared among cultures.

Academic Goal:

As long as my courses of interest in psychology are available, I will remain in good academic standing in my studies abroad, keeping my GPA above the 3.0 level and continuing on the appropriate path to graduating on time (within 4 years).

Because I am an out-of-state student, tuition and fees are quite astronomical. It is pertinent therefore that I graduate on time and fulfill all my requirements as achieving in-state status won't be possible until after I graduate.I am so lucky to have the opportunity to study abroad for about the same price my family pays each semester here at SDSU, so I'd like to take in as much experience I can while still staying on track to my ultimate goal of getting my degree within 4 years. I also would like to maintain my good academic standing, and only hope the distractions of such new and exciting experiences of living overseas won't stray me too much from my textbooks. Ultimately, I'd like to return to San Diego refreshed and enlightened by my experiences abroad and still be right on track to receiving my degree in May of 2009.

Personal Goal:

Given I am financially able to do so and the time is available, I will travel extensively outward from the "Gateway to Europe" (aka: The Netherlands) to sight-see and experience various other cultures, people, and languages, in at least 3 other countries.

This is one of the most exciting goals I hold for myself in my studies abroad. The wonderful thing about Europe is there is such a plethora of different cultures in such a small area, and travel among these has been made quite simple. There are so many destinations I've always dreamed of visiting (Paris, Greece, Italy, Ireland, just to name a few). I think there will be no better time than when I am smack-dab in the middle of such a great continent to branch outward and see as many of these sights as I can. However, I know that my academics will take up quite some time, and costs of  travel and lodging to these various areas will add up, so I've set a limit of 3 countries as a realistic baseline. I only hope, however that I can see much more than this, but know ultimately whatever happens and wherever I end up, I'll have invaluable and wonderful experiences that will last me a lifetime.
