IROCKETS SWIMMER MICHAEL FERNANDEZ TAKES FLORIDA BY STORM
11.08.2010 IROCKETS Swimmer Michael Fernandez participated in his first USA Swimming Meet at Martin County Aquatics this past weekend in Stuart, Florida and made a fantastic showing. Michael swam as an unattached IROCKET in 4 events – free, back, breast, and fly – and earned 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver medal. What a wonderful and exciting achievement!
Michael emailed today and said, “Good luck to everyone in your upcoming meet, and please keep me informed.” Way to go, Michael! You make the IROCKETS proud!
Michael also shared this picture from the meet. It sure looks nice and warm there in Florida, doesn't it?
Our own swimmer Gabi is going to be filming a commercial for her class project and she has chosen the IROCKETS Swim Team as her subject. So cool!!!
11.01.10 This is a great opportunity for our team because we'll have the chance to show our community what we do and why swimming is such a great sport. Gabi will be filming this week in practice and is the director, so that mean she's in charge of the film.
Here are a few simple rules when Gabi is filming:
- Always be respectful & well-behaved when the camera is rolling and when it's turned off.
- If Gabi interviews you, please remember that this is a commercial and that is different from a home movie. It means that we have think about what we are saying and make sure it puts our swim team and ourselves in the best possible light. You can talk about how much you enjoy swimming, your favorite part about being on the swim team, why swimming is important to you, and other things that you enjoy about being a swimmer.
- If you do not want to be filmed (or your parent/guardian does not wish for you to be on film), please let Gabi or any of the coaches know and we will be respectful of your wishes.
When Gabi's commercial is finished, we'll be able to put it on our web site and it will be a great way to advertise our swim team. This will be a lot of fun so let's make this a great project for Gabi as well as our team! See you this week!
The Coaches and Staff of IROC
Adam Lodewyk meets U.S. Olympians Vollmer, Hoelzer, and Crocker and Coach Bob Bowman
at Eastern States Swim Clinic 10/16 thru 10/17/10
Adam with Olympians Dana Vollmer, Margaret Hoelzer, and Ian Crocker in Cherry Hill, NJ
Adam Lodewyk attended this year's Eastern States Swim Clinic in Cherry Hill, NJ and it was a trip to remember. It was thrilling to meet the Olympic Athletes who shared their swimming expertise. Dana Vollmer (freestyle champion), Margaret Hoelzer (backstroke champion), and Ian Crocker (butterfly champion) are incredibly down to earth athletes who spent 2 full days with eager swimmers who were interested in improving their strokes and learning about what it's like to swim at the junior, national, championship, and Olympic levels.
Another highlight was meeting Bob Bowman, coach for Olympic medalist Michael Phelps. He shared his own swimming and coaching background and shared insightful and funny stories about Ian, Michael, and the other swimmers. Swimmers and attending coaches also had the privilege of watching Dana, Margaret, and Ian in action as they, along with Coach Bowman and Coach Richardson, demonstrated various aspects of each swimming stroke. It was a magnificent event and is highly recommended for any aspiring swimmer.

The excitement was high Saturday morning at IROC with coaches and fans cheering the swimmers as they raced against each other and for their personal best times.
The event was a swim meet held at IROC with the Irockets swim team and a team from North Country Community Recreation Center in Colebrook, New Hampshire. Several Orleans County swimmers broke IROC records and outdid their personal best times.
Heather Grieves is the only staff swim coach at IROC; the others all volunteer their time. Grieves described the volunteer coaches as highly dedicated and very generous with their time. The volunteers have not only invested their time, but money for equipment for the betterment of the team, she said.
The team meets four times a week from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. But the swimmers are only required to meet twice per week. One day during the week the team engages in land practice, a series of activities and games that build strength and coordination. The season runs from October 15 to April 1.
Swimming is one of the best exercises for building strength, it has no negative impact on the body, and it uses every muscle, Grieves said. Grieves hopes that the program continues to grow and she wants to let people know of the world of options for swimmers, including the ability to win scholarships.
The team members are very supportive and encourage each other, Grieves said in an interview Tuesday. The team of 21 Orleans County youth ranges from six years old and up. And the older swimmers are role models to the younger swimmers, Grieves said. “Its wonderful to see the older swimmers encourage the younger ones to do their best.”
Highlight results from Saturday’s meet:
- In the nine-to-10-year-olds 100-yard individual medley, which includes 25 yards of backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle, Emma Stuart swam her best time of one minute, 45.12 seconds, setting an IROC record.
- Roxann Downing set two IROC records in the nine-to-10-year-olds 50-yard freestyle with a time of 39.63 seconds, and the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 45.42 seconds.
- Tori Pappalardo had a record time in the 12 and under 100-yard freestyle with a time of one minute 15.94 seconds, with Gabriella Gyurkovis swimming a time of one minute 25.36 seconds in the same race.
- Eli McFarlane set a record for the 14 and under 100-yard breaststroke with a time of one minute 30.23 seconds, and Sarah Bilodeau won the nine and 10-year-old 50-yard butterfly with a record time of 44.75 seconds.
- Kristina Gauvin took first place in the 13-14 year old 100-yard freestyle with a record time of one minute 21.06 seconds, with Emily Pariseau of New Hampshire coming in a close second with a time of one minute. 21.57 seconds.
- Adam Lodewyk of the Irockets team set some IROC records in the 18 and under 100-yard butterfly with a time of one minute 14.77 seconds and in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of one minute 15.84 seconds.
- The eight and under relay team of Peter Gyurkovis, Grace Miller, Peyton Gilson, and Anika Hamby also set an IROC record for the 100-yard freestyle with a time of one minute 49.58 seconds.

Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC) hosted a swim meet on Saturday, Dec. 6. Twenty-eight members of the IROC swim team , called IROCKETS, age five to 17, participated in the event. A team from Colebrook, N.H. and a team from Essex also took part. There were more than 60 swimmers in 47 events, including relays, several different strokes, and distances.
IROC swimmers meet from one to four times per week and also participate in land exercises. These out-of-water activities are fun, and participants don’t realize that they are conditioning their bodies while participating, explained head swim coach Lisa Warstler. The swim team builds life skills, and teaches participants water safety. Swimming is a great exercise that utilizes all muscles of the body, said Warstler. Swimming can help prevent obesity, and help to stave off certain diseases like diabetes, explained Warstler. Its best to start lessons young, she said. The swim team helps participants learn to work and be part of a team that’s kind of like a family, said Warstler.
Those who wish to join the swim team need to have some swimming safely skills. Swimming lessons available at IROC can help prepare interested individuals who want to join the team. The team is competitive, and the younger participants get to see older, more experienced swimmers who they can aspire to emulate, said Warstler. Those who are looking for more options can take the Guard Start program beginning at age 11. At age 15 and up, lifeguard classes are available.
Warstler has been a swim coach with IROC for about one year. She came to IROC from Springfield, Mass. with eight years of experience in coaching swimming.
The swim coaches are Peter Stuart, Veronica Jedlovszky, Ted Chitambar, Ian Hamby, and Val Dillon.

- Natalie Ouellet, nine, of Derby, finished the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.65, a personal best.
- In the 11 to 12 age group Kristina Gauvin 12, of Derby took second place for the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 55.50. Wyatt Hamby, 11, of Derby placed second in the 50-yard breast stroke with a time of 59.08.
