SUMMARY:

First of all, we learned about temperature which is the kinetic energy in an object or the heat an object contains. We did a lab where we measured the heat of different object with different substances using  thermometers. Thermometers are a tool that humans use to measure the heat substances contain. We used Celsius, Kelvin, and Fahrenheit to measure this temperatures. We also learned formulas which helped convert these three different forms of temperature measurement from one to another.

Fahrenheit to Celsius: Tc=5/9(degrees Fahrenheit-32)

Celsius to Fahrenheit: Tf=9/5(degrees Celsius+32)

Celsius to Kelvin: T= degrees Celsius + 273.15

We also learned about internal energy which is the total inner energy stored in something. We learned that there are some substances that can take a lot of internal energy without going to extreme temperatures. These substances such as water have  high heat capacity, and other substances such as carbon dioxide have low heat capacity. Secondly we learned about convection which is the transfer of heat by the movement of the warmed object. About conduction which is the transfer of thermal energy through matter, from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. And about radiation which is the electromagnetic waves that directly transport energy though space.

Lastly, we learned about thermodynamics which is the connection of energy and works. There are two laws that we learned about thermodynamics. The first law states that energy is always conserved. The second law of thermodynamics states you cannot use all the energy to do work, in other words energy is lost while doing work.

This is an example of water flowing downhill, which shows how processes will proceed  toward the part that has least potential energy. it also shows how some energy is always wasted in the form of heat.

 Global Meltdown Article

This article talks about how the climate had been changing drastically and how we should think about what kind of planet we are leaving our children. The valleys around us that are filled with lichens show how the climate has naturally changed for billions of years. it also talks about how there are a lot of meltdowns going on and how there is nothing really being done about it.
