2009 Tasmania Conference

Conference Program (Subject to change)
 
Thursday 14th May: executive Boards meet starting at 8.30am
Optional half day local tour Hobart  surrounds, including Fork in The Road Garden Centre approx 9 am departure.
1 pm The IPPS Golf Tournament (open to all takers) /trade exhibits set up
4 pm Registration Desk opens
6 pm Board Buses for Government House reception (by invitation only)
8 pm Buses return from Government House to Salamanca Restaurants or return to Hotel (free evening)
All Participants will receive a personal invitation from the governor to the reception (prior to the conference), it is important that RSVP is given by the date requested on the invitation. Late Registration may miss out on this function.
 
Friday 15th May
Fellows Breakfast  followed by the official opening and welcoming at 8.45am
Our first speaker will be Terry Hatch on New Zealand Natives suitable for Hedging,
then we have Natalie Tapson from Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens on the tissue culture of Lomatia tasmanica an very endangered plant and followed by Mark Stevenson will discuss ‘Formulating quality potting mixes for propagation and growing of container crops’.
 
After the morning tea break  we will have the Rod Tallis award, and a short presentation from our American exchange person. Then Jeff Elliot will get up and talk about “Dirty Water”. Following Jeff we have asked Nic Cracknell to give us a presentation on Modern Tomato production, and then it is nearly lunch, but before we go we will listen to James Wood on the  Millenium seed bank work being done at the Botanical Gardens.
    

After Lunch and the Trade show, Robert Chin (Victorian NIDO) will speak on Invasive plants and the Nursery Industry-Australia, Canadian and American experiences.
            
Then Juliette & Eliza from Taupo native will give a presentation on the use of Manuka honey as a rooting hormone for New Zealand natives, followed by Mark Salter on “Greenhouse Berry Production experience”.

Stretch the legs and enjoy the trade show again, and for the last session of the day we will have Graham Saltiel helping us to “Select the right potting mix” , following Graham, Nicolia Rochester from Scotts (NZ) will give a paper entitled “fertilizer & nutrition of cuttings in prop-is it a con?”

Friday from around 5 pm we are out on the water for an hour, just to clear the head. (this event will only cater for 240 participants first in best dressed).
 
Get back around 6ish and head for the TASTE OF TASMANIA, The annual auction will be held tonight.
 
Saturday  16th May
Start the day off with a buffet Breakfast in the boardwalk room, The AGM’s will be held from 8 am to 10 am (separate rooms).

Buses leave the hotel from 8 am to Salamanca markets for those not attending the AGM, these people will have two hours to spend at the markets and they can then catch the tour buses directly from the markets at 10am.  (further news at start of conference). Those attending the meetings will leave directly for the tours at 10am by bus from the hotel.
 
The tours will include the following nurseries and sites: Granton Plants, Nic Cracknell’s tomato house, Plants of Tasmania, Island Bonsai, Jubilee nursery, Botanical gardens seed bank and Antarctic house, Newtown Station Nursery & Café,  with all buses arriving for Lunch at Westland Nurseries;
(Buses will go in different directions no one bus will do all sites)

The afternoon will be at Westland Nurseries where  series of displays and activities will happen and encourage you to get involved.

At 4 pm we start the buses back to the Hotel, via Richmond. We get back for the Gala dinner in the Tasman Room from 6.30 pm with pre dinner  drinks. Awards and speeches followed by the Tin Men till late.
 
Sunday 17th:
9 am start with The Mad Hatcher talking about ‘propagation of Dracophyllum and related species’ , followed by Greg Neighbour on “Cutting pre-treatments-Investigating some claims”  He will be presenting research on a variety of commercially available pre-treatments for cuttings that claim to promote root initiation.
 
Peter Ollerenshaw on Native plant breeding and developing new Australia 

n plants.  Followed by Michael Danelon on “How to better model your irrigation system”, and then to top it off with Hugh Gourlay “The Biological control of weeds”

CV:           Mark has a B Hort Sci. (Honours) degree and has worked in most sectors of NZ’s horticultural industry.  He has had 15 years experience in the nursery industry specializing with potting mixes and fertilizers.  Mark has managed HortFertplus since it’s inception in 1998.

 

Name:          Mr. Graham SALTIEL

CV:             Technical Manager for Daltons Limited.  He has had 26 years involvement in bark processing, media manufacturing, landscape products and sand.  At present responsible for the QA program, technical backup, procedure manuals and organics.

He is renowned the world over for breeding new colours into hellebores (winter roses), creating bigger, brighter clivia flowers and adding perfume to some clivia cultivars. A leading propagator of rare New Zealand native plants, he has a particular passion for divaricating coprosma and pittosporum
