Studio News:

• The Tuba-Euphonium Research Fair (TERF) was held on Thursday, May 3rd in the Atrium of Music West Interim Building from 12:30 to 1:20pm. Each student presented a poster and summarized their research project for the semester. Prizes were awarded to Steve Neillsen for most creative research, Kate Wohlman for best professional research, Ben Reid for best online representation, and Jayna Andersen for best poster presentation. Congratulations to all and a very special thank you to our special guest judges Dr. Nathan Platte and Dr. Robert Kirby.

• The TubaHawks Workshop for High School and Middle School tuba and euphonium students was a huge success. Read about it more at the School of Music Blog.

• Congratulations to Ben Reid, who won first place in Collegiate Division of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band Young Artist solo competition. In addition to his prizes, he will be as a soloist with the EIBB on their April 28th concert.

in February, Professor Manning taught and performed at the Isla Verde Bronces Brass Festival in Argentina. His colleagues on the International faculty included Ron Romm (founding member of Canadian Brass), Paul Archibald (Royal Academy of Music in London), Frank Lloyd (Professor of Horn at Folkwang Hochschule in Essen Germany), Jacques Mauger (Trombone, Paris Opera Orchestra), Carloz Overjo (Trombone, National Symphony Orchestra of Argentina) and Pierre Badel (France).

• For final projects this semester, the members of the studio have chosen some very interesting research projects. To learn more about them, check out the Final Projects page.

• Holiday Tubas 2011 was a great success. Despite temperatures in the 20's, we had a record turnout, including most of the Hawkeye Marching Band Sousaphone section. We also collected two big boxes of toys for Toys for Tots.

• This year's OkTUBAfest included a return to the Amana Colonies authentic German Oktoberfest, Spooky Tubas at the Coralville Library, a studio recital, and our special guest will be Dr. Ben Pierce, from the University of Arkansas. For more details, go to our Events page.

• Kate Wohlman is the new conductor for the Eastern Iowa Brass Band. For information on their upcoming concerts, click here. They recently placed fourth at the U.S. Open Brass Band Competition.

• Congratulations to Chris Dickey, the newly-appointed Professor of tuba and euphonium at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. Chris got his Masters degree here at the University of Iowa, where he was the studio Teaching Assistant and studied euphonium and tuba. Chris has completed the coursework for his DMA at Northwestern University and will soon be Dr. Dickey.

• Former member, Jeremy Crawford, who has completed his Masters degree at Northwestern University, will be
pursuing his Doctoral degree at the University of Alabama, as Demondrae Thurmon's teaching assistant.

• Former member, Chet Aliga, is now the band director at West Liberty High School in West Liberty, IA.


• Collegium Tubum performed at the Czech Fall Festival in Cedar Rapids Iowa on September 25th to a very appreciative crowd. Check out the video on our new Video page
