News & Up Dates QC games and the Lightweight Divsion - QC games always gets 3 or 4 lightweights who are not the calibur of the National Championship (yet). Chuck and I do not want to leave them out in the cold because QC games is hosting the Lightweight Championship, We have several alternatives: (1) Have a handicapped C division where the lightweights throw the 42 and the others throw the 56lb. This probably will not work as the C Division usually fills.
(2) Have a second flight of lightweights throwing with another division or by themselves. A downsides to this is that a combined flight maybe to large or an additional flight of throwers could congest the field. If I were to run a second flight of lightweights, I will need some one in that flight to step forward and judge that flight. If anybody have thoughts on this, please let me know.
Lightweight National Championship - Apparently (the collective) we are doing something right as the Quad Cities Games has been asked to host the Lightweight National Championship! It is a team effort to keep a games going and we all can take pride in this.
In Iowa, we have the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Quad Cities Games, the Irish Fest in Waterloo, Dysart 4th of July event, and a new event being started by Nathan Burchett in Mason City. Not to shabby not to shabby at all.
Tradition VS Sport: In heavy athletics, you can argue tradition to try to prevent changes in this niche sport, while at the same time on another topic argue it is a sport and tradition can be ignored! You gotta love it1
My Tradition VS Sport issue: Hammer handles use to be wood, mostly rattan. Some throwers were known to shave the rattan to get more whip out of the hammers. Than along came PVC. In the Midwest, 3/4" PVC conduit was used and now 1/2" conduit is appearing more as it is very whippy, generate longer distances over ratan and 3/4" PVC handles.
Come this season, you will see whether I go more traditional with 3/4" or more towards the sport and longer distance with the 1/2" or maybe I will have a set of both?
Calendar: The first round of updates are completed. Always double check the venue sites for proper dates and info. If you find mistakes please let me know. |
