Editorial

Editorial

Well this is my first attempt at writing an editorial, but before I do I would just like to say thank you to Robert for all the hard work he has put into this magazine over the years and to say that I wish he hadn’t had to resign as we were a great team. I have really enjoyed working with him and we have become good friends. I have agreed to take on the editor’s role because I know that many people enjoy receiving their monthly copy of InView and know how much hard work others put into making sure the magazine is produced and delivered each month.

When I enquired about the role of Joint editor that was advertised in InView at the beginning of 2009 I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’d always enjoyed the magazine and wanted to do something for the community I live in, but my work takes me away from home 5 days a week and I wasn’t sure if I’d have time to do the job. Due to the wonders of the internet, I have spent many an evening in my hotel bedroom reading things through and preparing the articles to send to Tony Croft who puts it all together. I never expected to be sitting here writing to you all as editor.

As you can imagine, working away means that I am not the ideal person to write interesting and informative articles about the local area and I am not even going to try to compete with the column that Robert used to write. I think the editorial is an integral part of the magazine so I would like to throw down a challenge to you all. If you come across any snippets of information which you consider to be of interest to people in this area, please can you let me know, either by email, letter or phone. If I’m not home my husband Geoff is happy to take messages for me.

I have just one snippet of local news to add for this month but I look forward to receiving your contributions and will also be on the lookout for more for next month.

Best wishes - Jenny

Remain Vigilant!

South Gloucestershire Trading Standards would like to advise residents to remain vigilant when dealing with unsolicited visits to their front door.

     It has come to our attention that rogue traders are visiting homes offering to paint roof tiles with a micro porous roof coating. This type of work is suspected to be totally unnecessary and it is believed that standard paint is being used at grossly inflated prices.

     Rogue traders are also knocking on doors offering alarm and security systems. These practices are known by the Police as well as Trading Standards

     Bear the following in mind to help protect you from falling victim to these rogue trading practices:

  • Be wary of traders who cold call  - genuine traders rarely need to drum up business;
  • If they claim work needs doing, get a second opinion;
  • Do not pay in full upfront – if they are a rogue trader, you may not see them again;
  • Beware, many rogue traders use high pressure, aggressive and intimidating selling tactics to get you to agree to a contract or pay a higher price than that quoted;
  • Remember that if you enter into a contract in your home, you should be given written notice of your right to cancel that contract. Failure by the trader to give you those details may constitute a criminal offence!

If you think you have fallen victim to such a scam or have not received your cancellation rights, contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 for advice.

    If you are interested in setting up a No Cold Calling Zone, contact Trading Standards on 01454 864419 or at trading.standards@southglos.gov.uk.

Protect Yourselves with a Password!

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards would like to advise residents of another way to help protect themselves from distraction burglaries.

     We recently advised residents that it had been brought to our attention that men falsely claiming to be from the waterboard had been linked to distraction burglaries. In an effort to help protect vulnerable residents from these types of crime, the Priority Service Register has been set up by the Home Heat Helpline. Vulnerable residents can set up a security password for all dealings they have with representatives of utility companies.

     To contact the Priority Service Register and arrange a password, contact 0800 33 66 99 or visit the website www.homeheathelpline.org.uk .

     If you have fallen victim to such a crime, contact the Police.

Watch Out, Rogue Traders About!

South Gloucestershire Council Trading Standards would like to warn residents that rogue traders are known to be operating within the district.

     Instances have recently been reported in Yate, Bradley Stoke and the Alveston area. The cold callers are offering to repave driveways, paint roof tiles and repair fascias.

Examples of the tactics used include:

·         Agreeing to do specific work and then refusing to, whilst not amending the price;

·         Using false trading names;

·         Refusing to acknowledge a consumer’s wish to cancel;

·         Changing payment terms to persuade the resident to continue with the contract;

·         Using intimidating and aggressive practices to persuade residents to agree to contracts.

Be wary when dealing with cold callers – you don’t know who you are dealing with!

     If you think you have fallen victim to such practices, contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

A Second Year of Success

A Second Year of Success

The sun was shining, the music was playing and the crowds arrived as around 12,000 people came to support the Carnival in its second year.

     The parade was a rainbow of colour, costumes, classic vehicles and musical delights. We even had our first ‘float’ in the parade!

     As people lined the streets, Thornbury was imbued with the community spirit at the heart of the day.

     After the parade the crowds poured onto the Carnival Field to sample the stallholders delights, watch some amazing displays and witness some outstanding musical performances both on the stages and on the field.

     There were a host of gastronomic delights available, rides galore at Albert Rogers’ Fun Fair and in the evening a fantastic production of ‘Fat Shirley’s: A Trailer Park Opera’ performed by Bristol’s very own The Three Chords Co.

     We would like to say thank you to everyone who came to the Carnival, to all our volunteers and supporters and to the Litterbusters who returned the Mundys to their clean and tidy glory after the event!

     The next Thornbury Carnival will take place on Saturday 2nd July 2011. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch, we would love to hear from you! For further information and pictures of the day visit www.thornburycarnival.wordpress.com

Beware - Telephone Scam

Beware - Telephone Scam

The new telephone 'scam' has arrived.
I received a call from a 'representative' of BT,
informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00, or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
     The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with
Telecom Plus, allegedly TP have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!
     I asked the guy's name - the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number -  0800 0800 152 .
      Obviously he realized I didn't believing his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this.
 AND HE DID!!
My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing
- until he phoned me again.
     Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then.
      I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.
      He hung up.
      Did 1471 & phoned his fictitious 0800 number not recognised.
      I phoned the police to let them know, I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently but it is escalating.
      Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please let as many friends & family aware of this.

This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been  0800 800152  which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple, he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying.  (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable.  Obviously, if this scam is real, once they have your credit/debit card details, there is nothing to stop them cleaning out your account.

Enjoy Singing?
Then come and join Thornbury Choral Society!
