Editorial
I’ll start my
editorial this month by sending everyone my best wishes for a Happy and Healthy
Christmas and New Year. I have received
lots of Christmassy articles this month which I hope you all enjoy.
A couple of people
have mentioned that there seem to be a lot of articles from Thornbury in the
magazine lately and I agree. I always get a lot of news from Thornbury but the
local articles always take priority so please keep sending them to me so that I
can include more news from the immediate area.
As we reach the end
of 2010 and start planning for 2011, please can you let me know if you would
like your local group meeting mentioned in the monthly diary. If there are any
new groups that haven’t contacted Inview please let me know and I can update
our ‘Groups Meeting in the Area’ list which we publish on a regular basis.
News snippets
For those of you who use the Internet, can I draw your attention to the
‘BT Race to Infinity Campaign’ which allows you to vote for superfast Broadband
in our area. (http://www.racetoinfinity.bt.com/home).
Apparently, if an area qualifies, there will also be the
opportunity to specify £5,000 worth of computer equipment for a local community
project.
South Gloucestershire Council are introducing new household recycling
and waste collection services. There will be a grey food waste bin for food and
a white recycling bag for bottles. (I am
sure I will get used to the change in time – just wondering where I am going to
put everything. At least with three dogs
in our household we don’t know what food waste is!)
Putting the clocks back each year apparently causes an increase in
accidents. The Royal Society for
the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) is campaigning for a change in the summer
and winter time system so that the UK would have an extra hour of evening
daylight all year round. Most recent
research suggests the extra evening light would save around 80 lives and
prevent 212 serious injuries each year. Even though mornings would be darker,
road users are less attentive and at more risk in the evenings.

CHRISTMAS ANGEL
Archangel
Gabriel had been doing the books, and was shocked to find that having managed
to save the Cloudy Rock Bank by massive borrowing he was deep in the red.
“There will need to be severe cuts” he told the Assembly of Hosts at their
Christmas Eve sitting. The angels on the right all cheered, whilst those on the
left threw their seat cushions at them. It got very nasty, whilst outside of
the Hallowed Halls the Guardian Angels could see a big cut in whose on the
celestial beat. As for the Angelic Choir their spokesangel (for Unisong)
was very upset and threatened a strike at Christmas. Sky News hyped it
all up and the Sweet Chariot drivers found themselves out of winter fuel.
The protest
meeting that ensued turned into a riot. Angels were bashing Cherubim’s with
their harps and the depleted Celestial Force were outnumbered. “It’s a
disgrace” yelled Gabriel, “we all have to do our part to pay the debts”.
Someone wrapped his expenses claim round his ears.
Then, suddenly, it was Christmas Day in heaven. The
warring parties fell quiet as bells pealed out and the depths of the universe
stilled, stars froze in the blackness of space and a loud voice boomed in the
stillness of the night “Peace on earth, goodwill to all men”
But not all
the angels were in heaven that night. There was one who had been watching over
a child in Haiti. His parents had died in an earthquake a year ago, and he was
living in a tent surrounded by floods and swamps with no clean water to drink.
The angel watched as those around the child fought to save him from cholera,
but he died.
And then the
only sound in heaven that night was that of an angel, weeping.

News from Emmaus
October was a busy month for the church. At Harvest we heard about
the Crisis Centre work with the homeless through the Wild Goose Café in Bristol.
Paul and Alan who work at the Café look away ‘banana boxes’ of food that will
help the workers and volunteers provide free meals to all who need them.
Emmaus Women’s Group
met at the Centre for a film night – it was good to chill out with food and a
good DVD. The next event will be a Christmas Meal on 3rd December.
Finally we organised ‘Farmer
John’s Party at the Farm’ as an alternative event to Halloween. This year the
children enjoyed a walk along a ‘forest trail’ in the twilight before returning
to Salthouse Farm for hot dogs and snacks and sparklers in the dark!
So come to any of one of the Christmas celebrations on offer. We wish you
all an enjoyable and peaceful time. Emmanuel – God is with us.

COMPTON
CAROL SINGING – CHRISTMAS 2010 -
in
aid of THE SALVATION ARMY
The singers will be out on their rounds
again in 2010.
Last
year there was an enormous support for the work of the Salvation Army, with the
generous sum of £700 being raised
from the local community to help those in various situations of need here in
our own country. As we are all aware,
the need this Christmas will be greater than ever, and harder to respond to
with everyone feeling the pinch. But, we will all do our best! Please join in
the spirit of goodwill and give as generously as you can, and if you cannot,
just enjoy the Christmas cheer.
If you would like more information on
the work of the Salvation Army, their website address is www.salvationarmy.org.uk
The
dates are as follows:
MONDAY 13th DECEMBER -
6.30pm. Meet outside the Village Hall to drive round
Compton Greenfield. Final destination tba.(any offers welcome!)
THURSDAY 16th DECEMBER –
6.30pm. Starting at
Abbeyfield House, proceeding up to the top of the village on the left hand
side. We then drive to Over where the Poulson’s will be our hosts.
Wednesday 22nd DECEMBER –
6.00pm. Meet outside the Village Hall, dividing into two groups
to cover Easter Compton from the top of the village on the right, and down the
village from Home Farm Way on the left, finishing at the Sansum’s house.
SINGERS NEEDED! All singers of any standard
are welcome. Please dress warmly and bring a torch. Please let me know if you
can come and on which dates – or even if you only think you might make it!
LISTENERS NEEDED! Please enjoy the singing and
join in. Give generously if you can, if not, just enjoy the Christmas cheer. If
you know you will be out on the night we call, please contact me to save a
wasted sing (and to make a donation if you so wish).
Any
enquiries to Jane Leslie on 01454 632255 or janeleslie@hotmail.com

Pilning Surgery Flu Clinic – Thank
you for attending
We
would like to express our grateful thanks to all of you who came along to the
flu clinic day on Friday 1st October. The success of our campaign is
down to you and it is satisfying to know so many of you are now protected from influenza
so early in the season.
We apologise to anyone who felt they had
an unacceptable wait or if you found us in anyway lacking, your experience is
important to us and we are committed to trying to improve year on year. Next year we hope to have a more manageable
space in our proposed extension
Despite being a nurse down (due to
illness) the hard work of Lindsay, Jeanette and the team, saw that nearly 400 of
us were vaccinated.
Thank you again for traditionally keeping
the 1st Friday in October on your calendar as a flu vaccination
appointment day.

Fly the flag
OCTOBER
On the 4th Dianne Lloyd celebrated her 50th
birthday. Mervyn and Marg Jacobs sent her love and best wishes. Ivor
Humphries clocked up the BIG 70 on the 5th. Barbara and the
family all joined in the Happy Birthday! Also on the 5th Kate, Richard, Dawn and Edwin remembered
their dear Mum Alice Hitchens. June
and Maurice flew the flag for Jackie
Cole on her birthday, the 25th. Happy Birthday Jackie.
NOVEMBER
A Ruby Wedding on the 7th
for Romaine and Bert Long Sharon,
Nicky, Jodie and Shea all wished them every happiness. The 30th
would have been the 87th birthday of Edna Budding. It was remembered by Wendy and the family who said
“Miss you so much Mum, always in our hearts”
DECEMBER
2 items sent in advance. “Happy Birthday
to our precious daughter” said Mum and Dad for Sarah Perkins as she celebrated on 7th Dec. On the 10th
Delcia and Michael Humphries are
celebrating their Golden Wedding. They are thankful for all the years of joy
from their 4 children, 14 grandchildren and a great grandson. “”How blessed we
have been” said Delcia. Congratulations all round!
On Christmas Sunday the flag will fly during morning service. For many
years it has flown on the 26th to mark the wedding anniversary of Ron and Grace Latham. Sadly Ron passed
away recently and this year would have been a rare event as they would have
celebrated 75 years together that
day.
If your request for the flag comes
after the magazine deadline day, 1st November it may not appear in
the December edition but in the following one
Flying the Flag supports the two choirs at St
Peter’s, the Sunday choir and the Festival Choir. Not only does the flag
flutter at the church flagpole for you, you receive a customised card with
whatever greeting you wish. We celebrate anything, if it’s special to you we
will arrange it, even at short notice- and all for just £5. We
are grateful to the many who donate more than £5, but will keep the official
amount at £5 where it has been for nearly 8 years.
Call Roy on 01454 632670 or write to
21 Chessell Ave, Pilning, South Glos BS35 4LP
Thank you everyone for your support,
our choirs go from strength to strength.
