Grades

Grades will be based upon tasks that are completed on-time. The tasks for the semester are as follows:

  1. 10% Weekly comments on video-lectures
  2. 5%   Foster Garden Worksheet due Sept 22 or 23, 2009.
  3. 25%   Mid-term Exam Oct 20 or 21, 2009.
  4.  5%    Visiting a Community Resource Worksheet due Oct 27 or 28, 2009.
  5.  5%    Bishop Museum Worksheet due Nov 17 or 18, 2009.
  6. 25%   Interview Writing Assignment due Nov 24 or 25, 2009.
  7. 25%    Final Exam (Exam period)
Grades will be assigned based on a percentage of the total obtained. Students who are very close to a boundary should not bother to ask to be raised to the next higher grade.
  • A+ =  96% of the total for the above six tasks.  Extra credit cannot be used to receive an A+.
  • A   =  90% of the total for the above six tasks.  Extra credit cannot be used to receive an A.
  • B+ =  86% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
  • B   =  80% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
  • C+ =  76% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
  • C   =  70% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
  • D   =  60% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.
  • F   =  below 60% of the total for the above six tasks plus any extra credit earned.

Extra Credit. The primary form of extra credit that is given is for completion of Segue follow-up exercises. These are found on the bottom of each Segue student instruction sheet. Student instruction sheets are located on the bottom of each Segue page. Links to each segue may be found at:

https://sites.google.com/site/seguestoscience/segues

The total number of segues assigned for the course may be determined from the class schedule page. Submission of all of the segue follow-up assignments is worth 10% of the total course grade as extra credit. Note that for some segues there is not a follow-up task. Instead credit is earned for participation in the segue activity during the recitation section.

Other extra credit is given sparingly and requires much work. Extra credit must be approved by the instructors  before it is done. Each approved extra credit task is worth up to 3% of the total grade (roughly 30 points for a full day, 8 hours+ of work), and no more than 10% of the grade may be earned through extra credit. Extra credit projects may include the following kinds of activities:

  • Participation in regular work events where ethnobotany knowledge, skills, etc. may be learned. [e.g., work in the Hawaiian Studies Lo'i, work in a community Lo'i such as in Lyon Arboretum, Wai'anae, Kahana, Waiahole, etc.
  • Participation in Ethnobiology Society at UH projects (www.botany.hawaii.edu/ethnobio/projects.htm)].
  • Participation in a training workshop wherein ethnobotany skills are learned (e.g., Bishop Museum workshops, Japanese craft workshops through the Japanese Cultural Center, Lua or other martial arts weapons workshops, Temari/Center for Asian & Pacific Arts workshops or classes).
  • State Department of Land & Natural Resources, Lyon Arboretum, The Nature Conservancy, training and activities involving out-planting of native species where knowledge of the plants and cultural traditions are learned.
  • Working as a volunteer in cultural festivals that involve ethnobotany (e.g., the 'awa festival, taro festivals).
  • Production of additional family interview papers intended to be used for family records.

No extra credit is given for:

  • mowing lawns, pulling weeds, or other horticultural activities.
  • participation in regular training in hula halau, lua groups, clubs, churches, fireman support groups, political rallys/protests, etc.
  • farming or growing gardens (some exceptions may be given where cultural knowledge of plants is clearly being learned).

ALL extra credit is due by Dec 01 or 02, 2009.

Missed classes/exams.  Class sessions that students miss may not be made up. If an exam is missed, contact one of the instructors as soon as possible to explain why. A different examination will be given to anyone who misses the scheduled exam than that given to students taking the regularly scheduled exam so that the students in the regular exam do not have to wait for all stragglers to learn the results of their efforts.

Late submissions of assignments: Any assignment submitted after the due date is subject to a 10% penalty (of total possible points) for the first week (for the summer, a week is equivalent to one class day), and an additional 10% for each additional week. No assignments will be accepted after the last day of class (in-class meeting).

Students with special needs for class should contact the instructor early in the course so that special arrangements may be made. The instructors are happy to help students in any way that can reasonably be accommodated.
