I believe many people from here don’t notice one of the things I’ve figured out. When a Yankee tries to say a N'awlins name containing 2 or more syllables they always emphasize the wrong part!
Cajun names supposed to be spoken with the strongest emphasis on the first syllable.
Example: Boudreaux
Yankee: Boo-DRO N'awlins: BOO-dro
I’ve even noticed this in movies where an actor is playing a N'awlins character and trying their best to sound Cajun.
The actors use a southern drawl when trying to portray a Cajun.
Cajuns have no drawl of any kind, southern or otherwise.
Here are a few other things I’ve noticed.
Yankees say: I need to put away my tools.
N'awlins say: I need ta save mah tools.
Yankees say: Do you want to come into the store with me?
N'awlins say: You wanna git down wit me at the stow?
Yankees say: I need to mop the floor.
N'awlins say: I need to pass the mop.
Yankees say: Can I please have a piece of gum?
N'awlins say: Please gimme a gum.
Yankee: I don't know.
N'awlins: Reckon so.
Yankee: That stinks
N'awlins: Man, that stinks, yeah.
Yankee: Where are you going?
N'awlins: Where y'all gone?
Yankee: You're lying.
N'awlins: Aw go play.
Yankee: I spilled the milk.
N'awlins; Ya tumbt da juice.
Hope that at least give other New Yorkers a heads up on what to expect before they come down for Marti Gras. I appreciate Nokie and the GT Boyz for their help and look forward to their hits to keep climbing the charts.
