Presentation: PMI Outreach: Second Harvest Food Bank Our chapter offers professional project management expertise to organizations in the greater Inland Northwest community. This month's program examines how our PMI chapter has assisted Second Harvest Food Bank in successfully completing a complex project. Second Harvest Inland Northwest is the leading hunger-relief network provider in the region since 1971. Second Harvest distributes more than 1 million pounds of donated food each month to help over 50,000 people in need in 26 counties in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.
During 2009 and into 2010, 2nd Harvest faced major challenges with increasing demands for food and shifts in the types of food needed from the many different donors programs. These shifts were causing inefficiencies and would eventually lead to inequities in distribution that warranted changes in how the food came in, was stored, and how it could fairly be distributed to over 250 agency distribution points
Richard Brown of our PMI INW Chapter volunteered to help the food bank along with project management expertise. He will be talking about his experience at 2nd Harvest and the rewards in doing community outreach engagements. He will also discuss some of the obstacles that may be particularly troublesome in engagements with volunteer organizations. He'll start the presentation with a brief video about 2nd Harvest.
Presenter: Richard Brown, PMP Richard Brown, PMP has a BA in Mathematics from CWU with post graduate studies in Finance and Accounting. He moved to Spokane in the fall of 2009 after taking retirement from Daimler Trucks North America where he was an IT Manager in Portland, OR. Prior positions span all aspects of management including Director and VP levels. His experience includes work at Weyerhaeuser, PriceWaterhouse Coopers and Floating Point Systems. He also built and operated two restaurants. He does independent project management consulting and is currently engaged at Avista Corporation.
Attendees: All meetings are free and open to anyone interested in learning more about project management. Students are encouraged to attend.

Please RSVP by using the LinkedIn Event RSVP method if at all possible, as this is a LinkedIn LIVE event.
http://events.linkedin.com/INLC-SME248-SOCIETY-MANUFACTURING/pub/229666
The last networking meetup was held at this location on Oct. 21, 2009. Attending were participants from a cross section of technical and professional societies located in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. The meeting served as both a networking event and as a forum for the societies involved to discuss potential mutual solutions to problems that the organizations face in common. Representatives from Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University, The Spokane School District, the Greater Spokane Inc (the local chamber of commerce and economic development group) were in attendance, as well as many business and industry leaders. This follow-up event will permit people from these groups to gather and network together again.
Two program segments are scheduled for this event:
(1) SME will be presenting an INTRODUCTION TO EUREKA presentation. SME has an ongoing collaborative project with Doug Hall's Eureka Innovation System [SEE http://www.eurekaranch.com/TeamEureka/DougHall and http://www.eurekaranch.com/ ] The EurekaRanch organization also partners with the US Dept. of Commerce's NIST and MEP organizations. The Eureka organization offers a unique innovation acceleration program that could have a high impact on business planning and ideation, marketing and process and product development. This methodology relies heavily on process engineering disciplines to ferret out new business ideas and directions quickly. It is a method almost any business organization should be aware of.
(2) INLC will be giving a brief update on the progress of INLC (Inland Northwest Leadership Council) in developing effective collaboration to strengthen the groups involved and enhance business and professional growth opportunities in the Inland Northwest.

Training Within Industry (TWI) and Structured On-the-Job Training (S-OJT): Effective Training for a Lean Management System Inland Northwest Lean Management Consortium (LMC)
Presentation Overview The Training Within Industry (TWI) program was successfully developed and utilized in the United States during WWII in response to an urgent need to increase production to unprecedented levels. Millions of civilians needed to be quickly and effectively trained to do production jobs as soldiers went off to war. After the war, this on-the-job training (OJT) program was exported to Japan to where it played a vital role helping to quickly rebuild their industrial base as a deterrent to social unrest. The TWI program became and continues to be, an integral part of the Toyota Production System. Building upon the TWI methodology, many successful companies going through their Lean transformation are now utilizing structured on-the-job training (S-OJT) to assure effective process standardization, improvement and training across their corporation. S-OJT is defined by Ronald Jacobs as “the planned process of developing competence on units of work by having an experienced employee train a novice employee at the work setting or a location that closely resembles the work setting”. Utilizing a well-executed S-OJT program has been a proven, measurable way to develop employee expertise and create an effective learning organization. Please join John Dickson and Dr. Robert Ketchum, Ph.D., as they review the TWI and S-OJT programs and highlight the importance of having a systems-level training approach for a company’s successful Lean transformation.
