Pamošanās

(The Awakening)  1999 for flute, percussions and 8 female voices.
It is awakening in early morning in summer, in sunrise. The Music is similar to pictures from video. First video camera is turned in to the grass, then to the men, after to the trees, to the sun and back. The process in nature is separate and absolutely independent.

Human emotions are only the part of the picture, where dominates piece and harmony.

Uguns rituāls (Fire Ritual), 2007 for organ solo

I.   Gathering at the Holy Site 04:31
II.  Evocation of the Gods 05:10
III. Sacrifice and Walking in a Circle 05:28
Performed by Ligita Sneibe at the Rigas Cathedral, 2008 February

Program note:

A fire ritual among the ancient Baltic tribes usually took place 4 times per year-at the summer and winter solstices and at the spring and autumn equinoxes, when the day and night are equal in length.
In the autumn, people gave thanks for the harvest, but in the winter they sank into contemplation, burning away all negative energy and emotions and illnesses.
In the spring they sought to cleanse themselves and prayed for success in working the land, and in the summer they prayed fo the sun.
The rituals had a strictly observed order:

1)   the choice of location and time,
2)   the evocation of the chosen element-Fire, Water, Earth, or Wind gods and sacrifice
3)   the ritual itself-walking in a circle, chanting prayers, singing songs, praising the fire, giving thanks, etc.

Augstā dziesma 2004 (Song of Solomon) text by Bible,
oratorio for choir and symphony orchestra.

I Kiss of King
Your lips cover me with kisses;
Your love is better than wine.
There is a fragrance about you;
The sound of your name recalls it.
No woman could keep from loving you.
Take me with you, and well run away;
Be my king and take me to your room.
We will be happy together,
Drink deep, and lose ourselves in love
No wonder all women love you!

Divi velniņi, 2005

Fragments from the story "Two Little Devils" by Latvian writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis (1863-1908)

I. The Gate of Hell.

Once upon a time two little Devils,
who wanted to escape Hell,
and wanted to see the big World,
about which their Mother had told so much,
noticed that the Guard was asleep.
They ran to the Gate, and because they could not reach the key,
one climbed on the shoulders of the other and opened the Gate.
With all their strength they pushed it and snuck out.
When the Gate fell closed with a loud noise, the Guard awoke,
but since he did not see anything, he thought he had heard this in his dreams.

II. The World's Brightness

At the moment they were out of Hell, God's bright Sun blinded their eyes, which were
only used to the Fire of Hell.
Oh, how wonderful was the World!
They played with birds and squirrels all day!

III. The First Night's Cold

After the adventurous First Day came the First Night,
and the two little Devils wanted to sleep.
But the night was so cold and because they were used to the heat of Hell,
they could not sleep one minute.

IV. Deeds and Misdeeds.

Then they started to wander and found a Farmer's property.
This was a great Oppotunity to start their Misdeeds.
"Let's do him some big Harm!" said one little Devil
and the other one agreed with great pleasure.
But some how all their misdeeds did not work in a way the two little Devils expected.
What ever they were doing, Farmer became more and more lucky and rich.

The adventure for two little Devils turned not in a pleasent way later too,
but this is already an other story.
