Memorials: UP chif secy faces
contempt action

October 6, 2009 | The Supreme Court on
Tuesday ordered initiation of contempt proceedings against the Uttar Pradesh
chief secretary for violation of its directive to stop construction at the
Ambedkar memorial and other sites in Lucknow.
The court fixed the next hearing in the case on November 4
and directed the chief secretary to be present.
The bench directed the apex court registry to register the contempt petition in
the matter.
It asked Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium to appear in the matter and assist
it as an amicus curaie.
The state government had continued with construction work at various
memorials in Lucknow,
violating the Supreme Court's order.
