Hello Gardeners - - - Things just keep getting better and better :-) Becky, a friend of the garden, dropped off a bunch of seedlings she germinated and a few larger plants. They are on and around the sink area. I already planted one winter squash and one artichoke. I placed the artichoke in the middle of the plot. The artichoke is a perennial thistle and it flowers. There are a few more for any of you early birds. These plantlets need to be in the ground, so be sure and take a couple for your plot. Thanks Becky ! More good news - - - We just got 1000 (yes, I said one thousand) seed packets of veggies, herbs, and perennial and annual flowers !!! The retail value is nearly $1800. Here is the story. I made a delivery to the GAP Food Bank in Rancho of about 500 pounds of citrus that several of our "pickers" picked last weekend in the Heights for our "Harvest and Deliver" program. Pari Blackman, Director of the GAP, received three displays packed with seed packets as a donation from a local food chain. The GAP didn't have a use for the seeds and if she didn't know about The Garden project these seeds may have been discarded. I was speechless !!! The list of seeds will be in a separate email. Many can be planted in the fall. BUT we also have loads of seeds for winter, spring and summer - - - probably for the next few years, or maybe for more community gardens :-) Remember our generous friend, Chuck Pfister? Looks like he will come by Saturday to bury our manure. What a guy! Work Plans for the Weekend - - - 1. The "Fencing Team" hopes to finish the fence this weekend. 2. The manure will get buried. Then we can spread the rest of the wood chips on the overflow parking area. If we get the overflow parking area cleaned up we can plan our ceremonial "First Planting" event. 3. Tony Sorvetti offered to help transport the rest of the concrete block we are buying from Lowe's on Benson and Foothill to complete the last two plots. I don't know the weight of a pallet of block plus 23, but we might have to make a few trips if the load is too heavy. Anyone have another pick-up to offer? 4. I hope to pick up the two flats of assorted veggies and herbs that Colorama is donating to us through Lowe's. 5. Let's get the plantlets that Becky donated in the ground so they thrive. 6. We need about 3 to 5 large garbage cans to store manure and excess dark compost soil. Any luck in getting green waste cans from the city? Is anyone willing to donate their green waste can while waiting for a replacement from the city? 7. Start planning your garden and planting ! NEEDLESS TO SAY - - - WE HAVE MORE PLANTS AND SEEDS THAN WE HAVE GARDEN - HA ! Mary |
