Hello Gardeners - - - Good News: We have a new gardener who will be taking Valerie and Greg's vacant plot. Her name is Shawna. She will be using the plot for her Botany class at the Learning Collective in Claremont. WELCOME SHAWNA. A Reminder: please leave your donations for this new gardening year in my mail slot in the shed A Warning: one of our gardeners came upon a huge spider web deep in her tomato plants and out came a huge black widow. Remember to wear your gloves when rooting around your plants Another Reminder: please harvest your veggies - - - there are some huge zucchinis and lots of tomatoes. If you don't know what to do with all of it, let me know and I will pick for Hunger Ministries in Claremont who feed homeless men. Question: Please email me your suggestions for planting our communal plot along the fence. We can try sugar snap peas again (although we should really rotate our crops every 3 years before planting the same thing in the same spot). Another thought is to plant 1/2 carrots and 1/2 beets. Let me know. Final Reminder (for now :-) start planning your cool season garden. In the next week or so I will be leaving several bags of Bumper Crop soil additive in the shed for the gardeners to share. Normally 1/2 bag is sufficient for each plot. Also, the old corn stalks are rotting in a pile by the fence at the back of the garden. Please feel free to mix them in with your compost. You may want to purchase new seed packets and/or plants for your cool season planting. The ones in our shed are a year old. They probably are ok, but I don't know if you want to risk it. Work to be Done: Here are several projects that need to be done, so please don't be shy and pitch in :-) 1. Take the black compost bins apart and mix all the compost together on the ground so that it will be easy for everyone to share. Let's use it up so we can start a new batch in the fall. 2. Clean up the herb garden planters. I will get fresh herb plants from Lowe's, hopefully free. 3. Weed where needed within the community garden. 4. Pull the rest of the corn stalks along the fence within the Garden. The corn outside our fenced area is still growing. Mary |
