Update 9/10/10

posted Oct 9, 2010 4:18 PM by Rob Perhamus
Hello Gardeners -  -  -

I hope everyone is either planting or planning their cool season garden. We planted lettuces, root veggies and squash hills along the fence. Also, various herbs have been planted from seed in our herb garden container.

Once the area outside our fence is cleaned up, I invite any of you to plant whatever you want as part of our communal plot. Winter squashes (i.e. acorn squash and honey squash) love to spread out and would be great to plant. Sugar snap peas against the fence is another possibility.

In case you forgot, here are some great veggies for the cool season:

Root Veggies (from seed):  radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips

Onions (from slips)

Cruciferous Veggies (from plants):  broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts

Cabbages (from plants): red, white, bok choi and pak choi

Lettuces (from seed or plants):  spinach, swiss chard, micro greens (mild or spicy), bibb, and other varieties

Sugar Snap Peas (from seed):  (the bush type (30 inches high) or the vine type (7 to 9 feet !) Note: if you soak the seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting they will germinate sooner)

Fava Beans (from seed): Note: if you soak the seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting they will germinate sooner)

And MARK YOUR CALENDARS:  The 2nd Annual Incredible Edible Community Garden Fall Harvest Celebration on Saturday, November 13th from 2 pm to dusk. An invitation will be sent via email next week.
