Hello Gardeners - - - Gardening Info: This month's issue of Organic Gardening talked about Mayan "Milpa", also known by the Aztecs as "Three Sisters". This is the planting of corn, pole beans, and squash together. The corn acts as the trellis for the beans. The beans put nitrogen back into the soil (since the corn sucks the nutrients right out of the soil). And the squash provide a wonderful weed mat with its dense leaves. All three help provide beneficial microorganisms in the soil and do a good job taking care of the pesky ones. In my home garden, I am going to plant some pole beans in various places where my sweet corn is growing and also insert a few hills of squash. Miscellaneous: 1. Looks like everyone is planting their warm season crops. The plots are looking good :-) 2. My artichokes at home and at the garden have earwigs and I found a Sluggo Plus product at Armstrong's that takes care of them as well as snails. I will sprinkle some on mine and Valerie's artichoke plants at our community garden. It's an expensive product but guaranteed to work. The cheaper Sluggo is only for snails and worth it if you have those pesky pests around your garden. It is one of the only products safe around children, animals, and edible plants. 3.
