Hello Gardeners - - - We have a "FENCING TEAM" and it consists of Dave, Tony (of Ann and Tony), and Becky. Another one or two people would be nice :-) They are making plans to install the fence between Friday and Sunday the end of this week. Yeah! THIS MORNING AT THE GARDEN - - - Amy, the PCC gardener, came by to say Hi this morning and had a super idea - - - she said "Why not use the branches and twigs to make an arbor around the gate." WOW, what a great idea ! I hope that a few of you who are "creative" will take on this task :-) Tony (the gorilla gardener "friend of the garden") and his plumber Joe (oh know, it's Joe the Plumber)came by the garden this morning to plan out the piping of the sink and irrigation. Within the next week to 10 days, we should have a faucet on the sink, a connection at the bottom drain to fit a hose to drain the water into a garden plot (we can also use buckets to catch the water), and 3 to 4 bib/faucet pipe connections to the main line to attach hoses to do our watering. We decided against PVC pipe down the aisles because they would have to either be buried (major trenching) or under the mulch (can get damaged). Joe the Plumber will get a device to meter our water usage for reimbursement to PCC. Thank you Tony and Joe. P.S. I've asked Tony and Joe about hooking up a drip system to the bib connections for all the plots. Ken Becker of PCC gave us the okay to bury the manure in the staging area. So I am on the hunt for someone with a backhoe and bobcat to do the job. We need to reserve several large garbage cans w/lids for ready-use. Still looking for a donation of some garbage cans :-) I added wood chips to the center aisle and started filling my plot with rich dark compost (using a few bags of Marian's compost and some from the dark mound). I placed everyone's name on their plot in case you don't remember your plot assignment from the design page on our website. REST OF THE WEEK - - - 1. Each gardener is responsible for adding dark planting soil and additives to their plots. I'd suggest adding about 6 inches. Feel free to use the dark compost in the plastic mulch bags (don't use any with dry leaves as they haven't been composted yet) and the dark compost from the mound. I'd suggest half and half mixture until the bagged compost is gone. We will get more dark compost soil. Feel free to bring your own. And, don't forget your additives i.e. blood and bone meal, fish emulsion, plant food, or whatever you want to use in the top 6 inches). 2. The area behind the storage trailer between the fence and garden plots can be covered with wood chips.Leave about 3 feet directly behind the trailer without chips so that fence posts can be installed. Dig out or clip close to the ground any plants stubs that were cut down already. Use cardboard and weed mat on the ground. We need to remove the square wooden post. 3. The back of the garden can also be covered with wood chips. I don't think we need any cardboard in the back, just weed mat, if available. 4. The front of the garden (east-west aisle) is the last to wood chip after the fence is installed. 5. We might want to hold off placing wood chips on the north-south aisle to the right until we get the long planting strip tilled and bordered. Any remaining wood chips will be spread out on the dirt parking area after the manure is buried. Mary |
