Hello Gardeners - - - YOU ROCK :-) What a wonderful work day. And it was so nice that the weather was overcast and cool most of the morning. We had 18 adults and children working at The Garden site today for nearly 6 hours. WOW - - - you gotta see the pictures on the website. What We Accomplished - - - 1. Plumb line set, holes dug, cement mixed and poured for all the fence posts - - - Thank You Tony, Becky, Dave, Kevin for your work. Thanks Dave and Tony for purchasing cement and gate posts and other supplies. 2. A 6'x8' metal shed was donated by an Upland resident, and we transported it to The Garden (Thank You Kevin, Dave, Tony, Greg, Becky, and supervisor Lindsay). It is set in place on two sheets of plywood. Thanks Rob for locating the shed and donating the plywood. If you want to witness sheer persistence and power to get this free shed to The Garden, look at the pictures on our website. They are truly worth a thousand words. Although the shed wasn't super heavy, it was quite bulky. And the door - - - we just couldn't keep it shut, even on San Antonio Ave. 3. The pepper tree got a haircut - - - Thanks Greg, Rob, and Dave. 4. Wood chips were added to the west side and the back of the garden - - - Thanks to an army of ladies (Marie, Janice, Amanda, Gail, Valerie, and youngsters (Joseph, Amiah, Tiara, Lindsay) for getting the job done. 5. A special thanks to Tiara for working non-stop until the end of the day on wood chips and clean-up. You were like the little energizer bunny. 6. The rest of the compost was bagged and transported along with the compost bins from Marian's house - - - Thanks Paula for helping me. 7. The planting bed along the fence was filled with manure and dark compost soil - - - Thanks Janice and Paula 8. Most of the planting beds have been filled with soil and additives and ready to plant in a week or so. 9. I left a bag with 20 packets of seeds donated by Lowe's Garden Dept. on the shelf in the shed. Select the veggies you want to plant, follow the directions on the back of the seed packets, and take only the amount you need. Leave open packet in the bag for others. We have: super sugar snap peas, carrots, swiss chard, beans, winter squash, spinach, lettuce, onions, radishes, beets and broccoli. 10. Did I forget anything? There was so much going on !!! I apologize if I missed saying "Thank You" to anyone. So here is a big "THANK YOU TO ALL". What is Left To Do - - - Start getting your garden plan together. I'll send out a separate email on this in a few days with some helpful hints. 1. Finish plumbing the sink and irrigation (Tony Sears and Joe Kline) 2. Finish the fence 3. Place blocks under each corner of the shed and screen the bottom. Marie and her granddaughter Tiara have some big plans to make the shed into a piece of artwork. I think they mentioned something about lavender metal paint :-) 4. Bury the manure (don't worry, I have someone who will dig the hole and bury it once I make sure there are no underground utilities to worry about). 6. Let me know if anyone wants to work on building the arbor from the twigs and branches. I have 200' of 16 gauge galvanized wire that should hold it in place and form a sturdy arch over the 6' gates. 7. Let me know if anyone wants to help me and Jeneece plan the "First Planting" event (which will probably be next month). Mary |
