Another BANNER day 09/19/09

Hello Gardeners - - -

Another BANNER day at the garden. Lots of work, and everyone is having lots of fun.

The fence is up and the gates are attached. Thanks Dave, Tony, and Paula.

Mike Pfister showed up with his tractor, moved the manure, dug a hole, buried the manure, and spread out the wood chips. YEAH !  The dirt that was dug up had a huge number of rocks. They are off to the side for use by PCC and the Garden. Believe it or not, we need more wood chips ! for the east side of the overflow parking area and for the northwest side of the garden.

The concrete block was transported in 3 trips from Home Depot to the Garden. And Rob got us a 10% discount. Thanks Rob.

We all pitched in to unload the block and move it to the back of the garden. Thanks Dave, Tony, Paula, Amanda, Ann, and Rob.

Paula and I set the block in place, and Plots 12 and 13 are now formed. Thanks Paula.

We moved the two green waste containers with manure to the left side (south side) of the shed (in case you are looking for them :-) The right side (north side) now has enough room for some interesting raised beds for communal planting. Janice and Marie went dumpster diving last weekend and brought back a large square wooden drawer that will make a great communal planter. Some leftover bricks and decorative block will make another great planter. DECISION TIME: let me know if you would like veggies i.e. root veggies (radishes, carrots, beets, turnips) or flowers, or herbs in these planters? Just send an email and majority rules:-)

Rob donated about 30-40 2"x6" boards around 4' long and a wire rack stand with several shelves. Thanks Rob.  Dave hopes to make a wooden floor for the shed with these boards and he has a plan to stabilize the shed.

Dave and Jeneece donated an iron baker's rack. Thanks.

WHAT TO DO NEXT ? - - -  PLANT ! Keep a log of what you planted where. If you forget, no worries, you will just be surprised in a few weeks :-) You might consider succession planting i.e. plant a couple rows of lettuce or radishes or winter squash now and another couple of rows in 2 to 3 weeks. Everyone can help themselves to the seedlings that Becky left on the sink and ground. Don't be shy. They are for us.

1.  Once you plant, don't forget to water. With this heat, I'd suggest watering every day until your seeds become plantlets. Consider the buddy system for watering with another gardener.

2.. Whomever is at the garden - - - please check the compost bins and the manure containers  - - - use the compost stirrer (remember "push down and pull up and don't stir or twist", or a pitchfork to aerate, and add water, if needed, to each bin and container. Thank You.

3.  Tomorrow I will plant our peas on the longest plot by the fence. I may plant some winter beans on the shorter plot by the fence.

4.  Plots 12 and 13 need cardboard, newspaper, straw, manure, hay, manure (sound familiar) and soil. Water in-between each layer. We are hoping to get a donation of soil from Miracle-Gro to complete these plots (and then some).
