Hello Gardeners - - - - You are not going to believe my message - - - we need to start thinking about cool season planting !!! Yes, I know it is only August and everything is still growing. But take out a sheet of paper, make a list what you planted last fall, and make sure you rotate your planting this fall to avoid soil and pest problems. As each of your summer crops dwindle, clean up that section of your garden and start your cool season veggies by the end of August, early September. Great cool season veggies include: Root vegetables: radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips Cruciferous veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage (red, white, chinese i.e. bok choi), brussel sprouts Sweet Peas Lettuces: chard and spinach and all the head lettuces We can't plant peas along the fence since we did that last year for our communal plot. We need to wait another 2 years before replanting peas. Let's come up with some ideas. Any of the above i.e. root or cruciferous veggies are good as well as lettuces. And with the start of a brand new year (we are one year old as a Community Garden), I am asking for donations for the upcoming year to help defer water costs and the purchase of soil amendments/nutrients. Suggested donation is $25, but whatever you can afford is appreciated. This is not mandatory. Mary |
