Hello Gardeners - - - WORK PARTY ON SATURDAY: Hope to see you at our work party this Saturday March 27th around 10 am. I know some of you will be there earlier :-) I hope to have a delivery of some soil at the garden by the end of the week. This can be used to top off individual plots (see below), and also put around our fruit trees after we weed the area. I am trying to get some free soil amendments from Miracle Gro and also some wood chips. I'm not sure this will happen by Saturday. But we have lots to do: weeding, harvesting, composting, preparing individual and communal plots for spring planting, etc. We have lots of weeds outside the fence by our fruit trees. They just seemed to have popped up before our eyes. Bring your hand tools, a shovel, rake, and hoe, or whatever else you may need to help out. A wheelbarrow or two might be nice as well. Several gardeners already started cleaning up their plots and readying them for spring planting. Remember - - - the early bird catches the worm. For spring planting, our plots should need nothing more than a sprinkling of manure (which we have lots of), and some all-purpose soil amendment i.e. Bumper Crop from Mt. Fuji nursery, or organic veggie plant food. These can be mixed into the top 4 inches of soil. If anyone wants to add additional soil to their plot, my suggestion is first to spread some straw (which we have lots of) over the existing plant bed, then sprinkle manure, add the soil, and finally mix a soil amendment into the soil. OTHER ODDS AND ENDS: 1. I noticed someone left a huge amount of seed packets, mostly herbs, in our shed. The packaging dates on these packets is 1999 (10 years old). I don't know if they are still good. But they are certainly worth a try. Thanks to the person who left them. 2. The flowers and plants around and in our gardens look beautiful. 3. The welcome door-hanging on our fence is a nice touch. Thanks to the person who put it up. Mary |
