Hello Gardeners - - - You may have noticed that your cool season veggies are taking a long time to germinate. Patience is a Gardener's Virtue! In my home garden I did have to replant some lettuces, but seeds I planted nearly 5 to 6 weeks ago (I planted late this season), are finally breaking the soil. And those that did germinate a while ago seemed to have gone dormant and are now growing (slowly). I am certain it is the weather. When you are at the garden please take a minute to look at the sides of our trash containers. Thanks to Tiffany for placing great looking labels on each of the containers. Hopefully the labels won't have to be replaced too often. I think they will do better than the "permanent" marker I was using :-) Also, once I get our 4 or 5 fruit trees for the back area of our garden, I will schedule a morning or afternoon for us to gather together and celebrate our planting of the trees. I am hoping that will be sometime in January. Finally, I talked with our landlords, and it looks like we can clean up and do some neat stuff in the fenced area within our garden on the NW corner. That area was used by a local lady for several years to plant various ornamentals etc. but she is not coming regularly and nothing new has been planted or taken care of there in quite some time. Once I find out the zoning for chickens, we are probably going to put a chicken coop with several chickens in that fenced area. Then all of us can share the eggs :-) One of our newest "friends" of the garden is willing to take on this project. Of course, that will make him a full-fledged member of our garden group. I'll let you know the details after the first of the New Year. Wishing all of you a wonderful New Year. See you at our Community Garden !!! Mary |
